Back in April, I bought a pair of 1984 944s from an old man who had parked them ten years ago. One is a decent car with 87K that the guy bought almost new. The other is a rat with 160K that he was using for parts. Both had gummed-up fuel systems and dead fuel pumps. Long story short, I got the nicer, low-mileage one running and made it look good. Now it's on eBay. 944
I just got other one, the "parts car" running, and I intended to keep it as a track toy. It's got 160K miles and is a little beat up pretty much everywhere. That said, it runs awesome and has no rust.
A friend of mine wants to swap me his gold automatic 1984 Z/28 for the 160K mile 944 that I just got running.
Would you trade? Ratty 944 for non-running Z/28? Which ever car I keep, I'm making a track toy out of it...
keep the 944. or have him add some $$$$$. I have owned both and the z is a step down in every way. Compared to the 944 the Z will have that "it is good enough" feeling where as the 944 feels like they took just that little bit of extra time / engineering / care.

But the 944 is kind of slow...

944.
The ebay car looks nice. I'm curious to see what it sells for. No reserve?

The reserve was $3000. I actually really wanted to keep that car. But, my wife and I are buying a house, and I have kind of a lot of cars. It was between that car and my 1997 Boxster. My wife LOVES the Boxster, and I like it too, so the choice was easy.

Camaro has a V8. It has to be fast, right?
Yeah, I think that stock to stock the 944 may have an edge. Not once you get into the aftermarket but you see my point. I had a 944 for a year and if I was going to build a track car, that would be at the top of my list. Mine had too many little things wrong with it for my DD.
944 makes a great track car as it sits and it can be built into a 944 spec car if you decided to go wheel to wheel. They may feel slow on the street but I assure you on track they can most definately hold their own.
Would need more Camaro details. If it's a solid H.O. car it might not be a bad deal, but the auto trans most likely pegs it a low output car. Still, if the body / interior are good it's a better fix-n-flip prospect than the 944.

944 all the way... I will admit bias.

Has a previous owner of both an 86 Camaro Z28 and an 86 944, I say 944 all the way. The 3rd Gen F-body was a little floppy, kinda heavy, and vastly underpowered (especially the pre-TPI cars).
No comparison, 944 all the way. MUCH better track car, and you can join the PCA.
<<<I am biased.
Jumping in as another 944 owner... KEEP THE 944!
(Honestly, I would have kept the nice 944 over the Boxster...maybe I'm sick.)
M030 sways, CIP1 t-bars, H&R springs, Koni sports. DONE!

And what do we do to make a 944 fast? Why, we put a Chevrolet V8 in it.
Having said that, the 944 would be a better track car, unless you are going to go all out, then the Chev will be faster cheaper.

We need one of those smilies that's rolling on the floor laughing...
Stock to stock, I don't think a 944 was far behind a mid-80's Camaro, hp-wise. Torque, yes, but not hp (speed).

Yeah, an 84 automatic camaro with a stockish engine is going to be slow, period.
I have no particular affection for 944s but this is about as clear cut as it gets... 944 by a mile or two.
