I got cut by a burr sticking out of someone's shoddy workmanship, right to the bone; took out tendon and a fair sized fluid carrier. Got a tat about my 20th anniversary, having it removed and redone for my 40th. While I like the option of a nonmetallic ring, married is in your heart. These are the perfect choice if you choose a ring.
Wife bought me a set of those (black, grey and white) a few years ago specifically because I was always wrenching. Loved having them and they are very weak and will tear if they end up getting caught. Mine finally disintegrated with copious use of brake clean, but I'm not blaming the rings on that.
This post reminds me I need to look into getting another set.

Tried a few silicone wedding rings but found they it gets caught on things and stretch over time. Something simple like sliding my had across my desk would cause the ring to drag and twist. Yeah in the shop it will break away but in every day life it was more annoying. I find it easier to remove my ring when working on stuff and clip it to my key chain so i don't loose it.
I just never wear a ring. It works pretty well, and its cheap :)
Since I got married 2 months ago (wow - 2 months!) I have been wearing my ring when I am at my desk at work and going out and thats it. Same with my watch, comes off and goes on my tool bench or night stand when I am doing anything with my hands. At work it either sits on my desk or in my pocket any time I am wrenching or out in the shop working on stuff.

I wore a silicone ring for a few months, and rather liked it. The hardest part for me was getting used to its “stickiness” compared to a metal band.
I got a tattoo after 10 years of marriage. I always hated wearing a ring and this won't come off in a bar or on a road trip. YMMV
Just get really fat. That way, women aren't interested. In the rare case that one is, I just find a subtle way to work my wife into the conversation. If that didn't work, I'd just say "Sorry, I'm married." "But where's your ring?" "Sorry, mechanic." That's sure to get rid of her.
I usually just take my rings off (yes, I wear like 4 rings including my wedding ring) when wrenching. Though there was one time when I was reaching down in the engine bay to get something I dropped and my wedding ring contacted the starter live terminal and I got a pretty burn all the way around my finger under the ring.
Then the other time I dislocated my ring finger playing volleyball (with my ring on) and it swelled up too fast to get the ring off....so I put it in my bench vise and cut it off with a hacksaw.
Also, wearing a wedding ring is the best way to guarantee women will hit on you when you're out an about. true story. I wear mine on my right hand now (euro-style) since I still can't fit it over that ex-dislocated knuckle and I don't get hit on nearly as much as I used to.
That, or I'm just getting old. Nah, definitely the ring..........

my wife almost exclusively wears silicon rings now. makes me wonder why that was so important to me 15 years ago.
We bought my wife a ring about a year after we got married because she wanted one, and we never bought me one because I was always carrying babies by then. We've talked about the silicon rings, we both have friends who wear them and we both think they're cool.
I wear one. For work, wrenching, and working out. It took a little getting used to but I like it. I’ve worn them for several years now.
I had had to get a new ring because I lost weight (good thing) and my fingers shrunk. My gold ring couldn’t be recut so I needed a new one.
I have a mokume gane wedding ring of white gold and silver, w/ a rose gold lining. I love it. My wife's wedding ring is cut from the same ingot. We've only been married a few years, but it's starting to show the wear of life. I love that, too. I don't care if I have to cut it off some day because of an accident and solder it back together. That'll just be part of our story.
Wedding bands are like race cars, the more real patina, the cooler they are.

Buddy's dad lost his finger when his wedding ring caught on a trailer door hinge as he was stepping off of it to run over to a race car crash

I too wear a silicone ring for the above reasons. I have a metal one I still wear occasionally but I’m always putting gloves on and wrenching and such. The silicone moves with my finger and bends around stuff so I never have to worry about it getting caught or scratching/marring what I’m holding. It’s been going strong for over a year now and I wear it daily. 10/10 would recommend
My wedding band is made of Damascus steel. I've always taken it off (when I'm not forgetful...) when doing any kind of serious wrenching- I have a special holder on my keychain for it I got in a Kickstarter a bit before we got married (http://www.ringsafe.com/ringsafe-solo/) and my ring gets clipped onto that for safekeeping.
The Dancer used to give me a bit of grief about it (but not too much, given I'm not generally around other people when wrenching or if I am, am around other guys) until a few years back when Jimmy Fallon almost lost a finger after tripping and catching his ring on furniture. Since then she's not complained in the least bit- she cares far more about my keeping all 10 fingers than the bugs out in the garage seeing me wearing my wedding band...
My brother was wrenching on his car wearing his ring and managed to get across the battery and wrench with it - turned red-hot on his finger. That was one UGLY looking burn/scar.
I don't wear one and still know I'm married; rings are just things and if you need one to keep yourself in line, that in itself is a problem waiting to happen.
