How much do you like it?

Maybe you just hit the relief valve in the bottom of the piston. Naw on second thought you're berkeleyed.
Since it's an ecotec is there another ecotec that might be an upgrade over yours?
There's a 9-3 in the country here in jax that's been for sale forever. I've been afraid to stop in fear that I'd actually buy it. Want me to see if it's cheap enough to be an engine donor?

It only has 117k miles. I wouldn't think it should be in this bad shape mechanically.

Turbo cars don't take neglect or deferred maintenance well. 117k miles at the hands of someone who beats on it like a Corolla is very different than 117k enthusiast miles. Didn't it need a clutch shortly after your purchase? My 9-5 had 207k on the original clutch (as well as original turbo and many other parts) when I sold it and was still an excellent running and driving car...if the PO managed to burn up a clutch that early it's just more evidence of abuse and crappy maintenance. Chances are this car was a victim of 10k OCIs and hard boosting below operating temp (read: VERY HARD on the turbo) for most of its life before you got it. Considering all this I'd be shocked if it wasn't about to pitch its timing chain as well.
I would get on CL and start looking for a parts car to rob an engine from. At least you have a 2004, the '03 had a bunch of goofy one-year-only parts. Looks like you have PLENTY to pick from on the Dallas Craigslist: https://dallas.craigslist.org/search/pta?query=saab&srchType=T
That really sucks. I think POD is on the money with the car, my Dad has an 05 with just over 200K with the original turbo and clutch, though he got it with only 26K on it.

It looks like most of those places would be happy to sell you just the engine.
