Wow,

I need my eyes checked, son is fine.

So what type of inertia switch is on an E53 BMW?   My boy ran a red light, hit a jeep in the back wheel, spun them 180 degrees.  No I have a smashed X5.

After the accident all the electrical stuff worked but would not start.  Just as we were about to drag it home I decided to put in in second and bump start it, it started.  While now running, there were no lights, radio, tach, speedo, nothing, running in a modified limp mode.  Drove it the .4 mile home where it is now parked.

Damage is to the bumper cover bumper and hood mostly.  Coolant did leak out and the radiator support may be pushed back on the top.  Current plan is to find the electrical issue, bend it back into shape and send it.  If it survives winter maybe look for a some cosmetics in the spring.

In reply to akylekoz :

my experience is from E60 (2007), so a couple years newer than your E53 but maybe same issue.

if it popped an airbag, it also separated the positive battery cable.  yes, the cable has a wee explosive charge (or something like that), which detonates to disconnect the main B+ at the battery.  IIRC there's still a small B+ connection which can support hazard lights etc.  you can push and clamp the exploded part back together enough that it will carry starter-level amperage.

Glad your son is ok and wow exploding battery cables. Just what I need to look for in the junkyard.

This will be my first check.   Is there a safe alternative to a likely expensive cable.

This reminds me of the Do you have a plan thread, life does not allow for a plan.  New plan is to get the oil changed in the other two vehicles, rearrange the garage back into three car mode.   Tear into the X5.  Watch for news at 6:00.

Specifically the one I need.

The old inertia switch bit us twice on the Lemons car, it likes to trip while on the trailer.  The early birds arrive, car won't start, they call me, Press the red button in the trunk.

There's two at my normal yard. Confirm the problem, let me know any special tools I might need, and I'll give it a go this weekend.

Here is some info that discusses the battery cable on an X5:

Thread 1

Thread 2

Stampie:

- The battery post nut is most likely a 13mm.
- If the seats have to be removed (hopefully it has manual seats), the bolts are most likely 16mm. You will most likely need a deep socket for the front nuts.
- If the seats are powered, the easiest way is to bring an 18v battery from a tool and a couple of jumpers and connect the positive jumper straight to the fuse that powers the seats, and ground the other one somwhere on the car.

Mine has power seats but I don't think they go back far enough to cover the battery.   Battery is under the x brace which is under the spare tire which is under the parcel shelf.

In reply to akylekoz :

My understanding is that the cable starts in the trunk and it is routed all the way to the pedal box. In order to remove it, the driver's seat has to be removed to be able to lift the carpet.

I could be wrong, but just in case be ready to remove the driver's seat.

I'll probably just splice it.  But it would be nice to keep the safety factor of the inertia fuse for next time it gets wrecked.

That is if I can get it patched back together.

There is a new U-pick near me, this is listed as an X3.  Clearly it is not and has a good front end.  They also have a white one with a slight kink in the hood.

Stampie, hold off for now I may have found some donor cars.

TBD if I will get it back on the road.   Pre tear down I feel about 90%.

I guessed at year of 2001 and I only looked up hood but via car-part.com there is a white one in Columbus IN asking $175

Sure, it's a full days drive there and back but if that means you don't have to paint and get a relative color match looking less ghetto, then it my be well worth it.

You'd have more than one days drive worth of time into painting with pre and post prep time.
