I found a 2005 Legacy with the 3.0. Guy says that trans cooler tank in the radiator failed and coolant and transmission fluid mixed.
Is this a case of just needing a new radiator and a transmission flush or would it have killed the transmission?
I know nothing of the 3.0s. Do they eat head gaskets like the 2.5?
I swore I'd never buy another used Subaru...
Solid it depends. If it pumped coolant into the transmission, and he didn't notice it until the trans stopped working right, yes.
If it pumped trans fluid into the coolant, and he didn't notice until one of the higher coolant hoses turned to jelly and burst, probably not.
Have never heard of any major mechanical issues on the EZ engines aside from being kind of a pain to work on.

He just responded to me. 225k miles. That’s too many for me even without issues.

It's the H6 motor? That was a sweet one if you can find a car with one that hasn't rusted out.
Shame about the mileage, but for future reference I have heard that the EZ-series sixes are pretty overbuilt and without issues if you can tolerate the poor fuel economy.
Friend of mine just sold a lowish miles 3.0 Outback. Doing the timing set on it was a massive pain compared to an EJ.
