So I called a local Subaru dealership two weeks ago for information on ordering a BRZ. Called back today to put down a deposit and get an order in. Sold out for the 2022 model year. I was told by Toyota 2 weeks ago that they were already sold out. Any one heard any different or any Subaru dealership people know any thing more? Thanks in advance.

All closed. They are out of components at this point to build and are prioritizing higher volume products for what they are getting. Glad I took delivery already last week.

Wow, what a bummer. Based on reading that full thread (towards the end as of right now), it looks like demand for the twins is much higher than the expected.

I put down a deposit in December but my dealer did did not have any allocations left.  They were hoping to get more this month but found out subaru was not taking anymore orders.

I was able to take over a previously placed order that was canceled when the original buyer found a car in stock at a different dealer.

The car i am getting is silver not the white I originally ordered and is a limited not a premium.

Get on the gr86 Facebook forum, people periodically post cars that are available.  That's how I found my silver brz.

Also another issue is for some reason toyota thought it would be smart idea to order 75% of the gr86's with an automatic.  That means enthusiasts are fighting over a smaller pot of vehicles.  Not to mention toyota dealers seem to be ridiculous with dealer add on fee's.

Guess I'll just have to buy a Z then....

If you're already selling a kidney, might as well lose 1/2 a liver too and get the upgrade right?

That's sucks, I can imagine being ready to buy and then finding this out. Hopefully they can start up again in time for summer deliveries?

They are trying to get more allocation from me talking to a SOA employee that would know. They just didn't over extend what they could get. If they can, they will reopen then order bank.

Sounds like the Z situation will be an even bigger mess. No pre-orders accepted. Allocation to dealers only. So much for that $40K sales price. I foresee that being a 10-15% market "adjustment" on each of those.

Allocations probably means loaded with all the stuff our lot could do without, like slushboxes, sunroofs, luxury interior packages and all that jazz.

And why stop at only 10-15% ADM? Gotta dream bigger than that.

1970 all over again.  Datsun dealers added aluminum wheels, crappy side molding and bumper override bars to jack up the price of the 240Z.

Subaru was allowing customers to order whatever they would like.  Toyota on the other hand is stuck what they are allocated.

If you look on autotrader about 500 gr86's are available in the US.  400 are automatic...  smart move Toyota

I didn't realize these were out yet until I passed a shiny red one sitting out front of the Toyota dealer on my way into work this morning. I've been really curious to drive the new one and see how it compares to my '15 FRS, and since that dealer has been begging to make an offer on my car anyway I figured this might be an excuse to oblige, but alas their website shows it's an auto frown.

All accounts seem to show the new engine is underrated at 228 HP and is putting 35-40whp more to the ground then the previous 200hp engine. Can't wait to see what they do with a header and E85 tune.

Someone in one of the FB groups mentioned that, apparently the total Toyota allocations were 80% automatic. A lot of people stated they ordered Subarus because Toyota decided to hand out cars like they're 1980s Mercedes.

I mean IIRC, at least for south east toyota dealers, you could never custom order a toyota, it was always only what the factory sent out. Any toyota vehicle.

The exact reason a BRZ is in my garage. I could care less about one or the other but I wasn't going to play the allocation game. My dealer was great about everything.

I wonder how hard it will be to swap the big engine into a GT86?

I sort of wish Toyota/Subaru went the "Honda" route and released the GR86/BRZ in manual only. Can't believe there's a 80% allocation of automatics in a 2 door sports car. I don't think people get these cars to be used as appliances.

I would think pretty easy honestly. There is a lot of carry over between the generations with the engine being the biggest performance change.

Here is the 22 engine bay.

2020 Engine bay.

I found this on the gr86 Facebook forum.  The guy does a good job describing the subaru order process.  Thought it was worth posting...

"Subaru’s system is hands down better than Toyotas but as dealers get more orders their own store’s ETA’s will get pushed back compared to another store who hasn’t taken much orders. This backlog of orders is naturally going to happen at stores selling at MSRP or better prices because the orders get piled on as more people find out you can get the car for a good deal at the said dealership.

First off, without getting too technical…a dealership does not choose which cars land in their inventory. It is determined by bigger and higher corporate people and decisions.

The only exception where the dealer can “choose” which cars get put into the inventory is when a customer “orders” the car. By “ordering,” this means the customer is choosing a configuration of a dealership’s future car.

When customers place an order, a vehicle order number (VON) is generated which is proof the *configuration* the customer chose was officially recorded and requested from Subaru. Something also generated that the dealer sees and customer usually doesn’t is the Month of Allocation. This is not the ETA, it is the month which the unit & its configuration that was ordered is counted toward.

One dealer cannot get 200 cars and the other dealers get 10 cars. There is corporate data that determines the max and minimum amount of cars a dealer gets in a given month. This is what the term “allocation” refers to.

So when someone “orders” a car from a dealer they *burn* one of dealer’s future units/stock in the future allocation when they choose the configuration. If you ordered October and the dealer has a Jan ETA then the means the orders before you have burned up November, December, etc.

Another thing, the build date doesn’t show up to dealerships. If a car is allocated for January, then the factory will find a MATCH to fulfill that order that was “promised” for January. So your car could already be built and is just waiting for the Matching process.

Check out the document below for more info.

You cannot check a VIN yourself but you can ask your salesperson about the information in the document to get a better sense of when your car will get to the dealer."

That is pretty nutty considering I have not actually seen one on the road yet. And living in CA I feel like I usually see the new cars here before they are even on sale.

If you look at the forums and Facebook pages, it's pretty crazy to see how many under 30 guys are buying auto's because they don't know how to drive a manual and/or don't want to learn.

Unfortunately, there are a ton of guys that buy these cars to slap crappy Taiwanese knockoff coilovers and widebody kits, just to hard park at the local Cars and Coffee meet.

Automatics are faster in day to day driving, though.  You can accelerate more quickly from a light because you don't have to nursemaid a clutch engagement, and you're not letting off the throttle three or four times before you get to 35mph.

If Toyota has an 80% automatic allocation, and people don't want automatics, does that mean I can get a GT86 at a discount?  Subaru badges can't be all that expensive...

I'm sure this is true (I don't have any official 0-60 times) but I feel like if a manufacturer goes out of their way to make an old-ish school analog vehicle, they might as well go all the way. Oh well, times are changing!
