I need a turbo for the LMP360.  The plan is to build a NA/T on the EJ251.  I imagine this ends in ruin when I blow up the EJ251 but it's a fresh rebuild, and my power goals are modest.

Like 190-210 WHP modest.    So low boost.

I'll be running a SpeedyEFI with proper sized injectors.

But I need a turbo.   The "easy" button is a OEM TD04 off a WRX, but I rather not buy a worn out OEM turbo.

Like everything value is the name of the game.  I'm not against spending a few hundred on this assuming it makes sense, but I also don't need a $700+ dual ball bearing variable geometry thing that can make 600hp because again, ~200whp goals.

Is a Maxpeedingrods or CXRacing TD04 my best choice?  I don't have header to interface with or any oil lines yet so something that has a clear "buy these parts to fab up oil feed and flanges" has appeal to me.  Also something with less proprietary flanges then Subaru stuff uses would be nice.

I don't want lots of psi so what I know about maps makes it a bit of a challenge due to the displacement of the EJ25 at 2496CC @ 6500RPM.   But educate me please if I'm mistaken.

I'm not being lazy but I'm just not smart in this area and am hoping someone can just make me a link that says "Buy this turbo" because my brain is full of other areas of automotive knowledge and I'm hoping someone who's brain is big in this area will help.

Doesn't the flying miata turbo kit use like a weirdly large turbo on low boost like this to good results? I know it was a ND Miata kit that did that. They are making 240whp or so one that not 210 or 200 but you could run even lower boost.

Low boost and good response?

Something like 10 psi and full boost at 3500 rpm?

In reply to birdmayne :

Something like that.  Maybe even lower boost.  6-8 psi is apparently "safe" but 10-12 starts to get aggressive for the EJ251.

Apparently after some research a VF40 out of a 2.5 XT Forrester is a 6psi wastegate and pretty optimally sized.  But .  It's all proprietary flanges.

So maybe something similar sized with more universal flanges?

IIRC VF40 is a 52trim wheel. (My old Legacy GT came with this turbo)

Something like a GT20 would work well.

I'll do some digging tonight

Proprietary flanges but they bolt right up to a Subaru up pipe, and IIRC the up pipe/manifolds/crossover pipe from a turbo car fit the SOHC heads, as long as you have a SOHC with dual exhaust ports.  If that all will fit the chassis the engine is in, at least.

The upside to this is that Subaru largely used the same flanges for everything in the US market.  I have a 2007 STI turbo bolted up to a 2003 WRX engine and downpipe.  (Well, it started as a downpipe allegedly for a 2003 WRX...)  So you can swap between the Mitsubishi and IHI turbos as you see fit.  Downside is that you end up being limited in the size of turbo you can use.

I will allow that a GT35R (a real one) is a real hoot on a 2.5 at low boost.   If you can make it fit.

Those recommendations remind me of shopping for  T-shirts and underwear! "6-8psi safe, 10-12psi bad". What about me-the guy who wants 8-10psi? cool
