Is replacing head gaskets on a DOHC Legacy Outback a job that can be done with the engine in the car, or must it come out ? There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of room between the heads and the frame rails to get the longish head bolts out.
I hate this car.
Disconnect engine mounts, push one side of engine up. It will be tight but you can do it.
it can be done but i feel it is easier to just pull the motor. it just seems easier to me.
here is a good video of pulling the motor

Vastly easier done with the engine out of the car. Pulling a Subaru engine is so simple I don't know why people resist it so much.

It takes nearly the same time to pull the engine as it does to do it in the car, but usually involves MUCH less cussing and less risk of screwing something up. I recommend pulling the engine unless you have a REALLY good reason not to.

I'm awfully tempted to call the junkyard to come and get it. Tried to remove the exhaust pipe and broke the first two studs I tried. Everything is rusted and won't break free easily. There's been PB Blaster on them for several days, too. This POS is starting to get on my nerves.........

Maybe you should call the moving company instead? Salt is the devil!

I've sworn I'll not buy an older car up here again. It's worth a trip south to Tennessee, or North Carolina to buy a rust free vehicle. I bought my van from a member on this board in NC and it was worth every penny of the $600 it cost me to go get it just so I can unbolt stuff without fear of breaking ,or stripping bolts.
