I am planning to delete the (wickedly heavy) sunroof on my 928 track car build. I was expecting to drill out some spotwelds and deskin the roof, but upon removing the headliner, I find to my dismay that the roof is kinda structuralish.... What to do, I was planning on skinning it carbon :-/
With a structural roof, I'd just remove all of the sunroof stuff, patch a fixed panel in place of the sunroof (metal or otherwise), smooth it out and paint it so it looks like it was never there from the outside. Then swap in the non-sunroof headliner to get some headroom back and you're good to go.
can you do proper sub frame connectors in a 928? if yes, then you can de-skin the roof as planned, remove all the factory structure underneath, replace it with something lighter and cleaner, with provisions for helmet clearance. then re-skin in carbon. also, a proper roll bar will help drastically in the department, so if that's already in the cards, do that first.
The 924/944 guys strip them down and lock them in place with metal plates and bolts.
Honestly, don't over think it too much.
The 928 is pretty seriously stout and while a good cage will always help, this isn't a flexiflying Mustang :)
