Yeah, I bet there aren’t many techs in the Midwest who have rebuilt a Tau before.
Talked with the service writer this evening, I’d asked him to work up a ticket assuming a long block instead of a rebuild. Got confirmation a long block will come in under the warranty cutoff, no out of pocket costs. That makes the most sense and we gave the go ahead.
The dealer is being good to us. Tonight, they gave us a 2020 Santa Fe as a loaner while the car is in the shop. We exhausted the warranty’s 10 day rental benefit and were facing $300 a week to keep going with it, so the loaner earned some goodwill from us.
We are being low key and appreciative of the service guys and a respectful approach is paying dividends. I’ll post again if anything else pops up.

Sounds like a reasonable path forward for a crummy situation. Here's hoping the new engine works out for you.

Because wolves are much more aggressive and harder to domesticate.
Edit: sorry, this isn't the Animal Planet forums

It was pointed out to me on the first page that since he wasn't the original owner he gets the 5/60k powertrain, not the 10/100k powertrain warranty.

Hyundai stopped making the 4.6 in 2011 and made the Tau as a 5.0.
If the dealer is being cool and working with you that's great ,
Did you call corporate and talk to anyone there ?

At $17k for a rebuild the thing better end up with titanium internals, because you can get an LS7 crate motor for around $13-15k.
Good news on long block.
In my opinion, rebuilding engines is a dying, if not dead art.
Haven’t had to pick up the phone to corporate. I think the dealer is doing their best.
Keep us posted. But I like the no money out of pocket for you idea.
