Hi all! Know of a TDI that just snapped its timing belt. So the question is, does the TDI have an interference engine? Thanks.

Can you even build a Diesel that isn't given the compression they're running?

Yep. Very much so. You'll need to pull the head to see how much damage was done.

If you're lucky, you might only need a couple of valves replaced. If less lucky, a new head. If unlucky, broken pistons as well. If really unlucky, broken pistons and scored cylinder walls.

Thanks guys! That was quick!! And thanks for the link to TDIclub. They haven't pulled the head and want to sell as is, so could be anywhere in the range of possible damage I guess. Will go do some more reading on it. Thanks.

It could be worth fixing if the price is right. If it only needs a head, it'll be about a $1000 +/- for parts (assuming you have TDI tools - if not add another few hundred). If it needs an engine, it gets harder. Good TDi engines go for princely sums these days. But there are guys and vendors who can help on that site.

If the rest of the car is in good shape and mileage is reasonable, I could see it sellign for a couple of grand. At that price point, it could be fixed and sold for a decent profit.

Prepare for the worst, that way you aren't screwed when it is the worst. Here's a car that was towed in to me after the timing belt broke.

Anybody wanna guess the engine?

Wow. Maybe I should stick to trying to figure out how to get the Miata running.
