So there's a yootoob out that says yes indeed Tesla's almost ready to put the Roadster on the market, and oh just by the way there's a SpaceX option. And a pic of a pair of freaking rocket nozzles sticking out the back. Once I stopped aspirating my coffee, we proceed further and find that they intend to fill the back seat area with a large atmosphere pressure tank to run Falcon 9 style cold thrusters as "braking, cornering and acceleration assist".

I have questions.

Is Elon just pulling my leg?

Can you get enough thrust for enough time for this to actually work?

What happens to the shiny happy "share the road" cyclist if you hit the side thrusters as you finally get around him?

Will this be available as a DIY kit? Asking for a friend.

Elon's been dead serious about the rocket boost thing since the new roadster was announced. Will it make it to production? Who knows

In reply to Keith Tanner :

Yes I did, which is why I'm down a coffee...

If this is really a thing, I don't see how I can live without it. Thanks a lot Elon, you've overcome my misgivings about an electric car without addressing the battery issue even once. Now all I gotta do is get a winning lotto ticket...

Nope, he's genuinely accomplished about 90% of everything Tesla sets out to do.

Yes AND no. I can't recall whom, but people on Youtube have tested if modern tires can grip the road enough to make the cold thrusters a usabale feature and it seems a 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds is the hard limit. The Plaid already seems to do it.

Shock possibly, and for the latter- best we've heard is the dealerships will have to do the refill, but they're just using compressed CO2 in tanks so maybe a welding shop could, like Airgas? Not sure.
