Seriously?!? I haven't driven a full size truck in years, and keep hearing people say how much they have improved in the last two or three decades...Yeah, but apparently so has every other vehicle on the road too. While I fully understand why a limited percentage of people need to own one of these things, I simply cannot wrap my mind around why anyone who doesn't would actually want to...Let alone choose to.

Even if I didn’t use my truck as a truck, I personally HATE sitting commuter-car-low in traffic. Having a better view of my surroundings is reason enough for me to want a truck.
It’d be easy for me to turn this argument onto so many vehicles, probably every single class of vehicle you’ve ever owned and loved. But I want you to drive whatever you enjoy and for whatever reason you enjoy it. I simply don’t care why others like what they like. Life is too short.
I don't get it either, but it would sure be a boring world if we all were the same and had the exact same preferences.

I sure didn't think I was going to get sucked into this arguthread, but... Holy arms race with no winners, Batman. Now half the population commutes in Explorers, and you have a commanding view of the latte in cupholder of the truck next to you, but otherwise the same situation as before, only a foot or so higher.
Anyhow, trucks are great. I love mine, though it's really only used as hauler/spare-car. It's just the getting-an-advantage-on-the-people-around-you angle chafes a bit as I sit here in the year of Ford-drops-to-two-cars.
I bought mine to do racecar stuff with. It's too big to reasonably drive daily in/near Washington DC but I still do it because it's my only street car. It's nice to sit in because it has a lot of options. The ride isn't great if it's unloaded, but it's good enough. Great on road trips. If I wasn't towing but still wanted multi-purpose and did a lot of home improvement type of work, I'd rather have a Tacoma/Ranger/Colorado as they're a better size. But for a single "do it all" vehicle that can be DD'd, the half-ton truck works for a lot of people.

Since my commute consists of I’d say 50% smallish cars, 25% smallish crossovers and the rest is pickups and box trucks...

I think the question might be restated as: What is the appeal of driving a full size pickup truck as a daily driver.
Clearly there are a good number of them out there that get little use as a "truck". I suspect a lot of these are a simple image projection thing. Similar to reasonably well off person driving a Prius (in that they don't really need to drive it).
The other half of the answer is likely "because you can". Modern truck give almost nothing up to the typical vehicle (which are mostly SUVs anyway).
The question that creates is: What if I actually just want a "truck" to do truck things and don't want to pay for all these SUV/car luxuries? I think you are pretty much SOL on that one.

Well, the other thing to consider is that incentives when buying new seem to be much stronger on trucks vs equivalent SUVs. I bought my F150 in March and asked to cross-shop the new Expedition. Would have been another $10k for the SUV version of my pickup, so I got the pickup. In truth, either would have worked for my needs.
You can absolutely get a fairly stripper F150, too, if you just want to do truck stuff and don't want the luxuries. Go build a basic 2.7L F150 XL on Ford's website, it can be done and they are pretty cheap given the capability.

I'm pretty darned happy that the F150 is the top selling vehicle in America. My bank account likes it even more.
And since I don't like trucks, I'll never own another. Simple solution, and I still benefit.

A view of the latte is much better than a view of the undercarriage.
I love my Miata, but it is uncomfortable in traffic.
Not sure how this is a surprise. The f150 has been the best seller for a long time.

The problem with modern trucks is that they are are just too damn small. I want a truly bigger truck
Current trucks are pretty darned good "do it all" mobiles. Commuting in absolute luxury, being a family car, high-speed road trips, doing real work like towing and hauling dirty stuff in the bed, off-road trips, camping, hunting, ikea trips, etc. Trucks can do all of that no problem.
And all you pay is slightly more at the pump because gas mileage isn't as great as a smaller vehicle. Is it a little harder to park downtown? Sure, but it's still not hard.
The only logical competition I see for a single vehicle that does almost everything well is from minivans. Sedans are dumb (so much wasted space), wagons give up tons of interior volume to minivans with realistically no other gains, small cars and sports cars obviously are built with a specific purpose (rather than "do it all") in mind, and SUVs are just trucks that can't haul dirty stuff.
I see America buying trucks as an overall very logical move, especially compared to some of the other junk we tend to buy.

No, this is just reminiscent of a very old thread that went on for a VERY long time called SUV's Suck so people are being cautious.
It can get a bit argumentative here sometimes, but nowhere near what you see most everywhere else. (there is an occasional dust up now and then of course)
