My dad’s ‘17 f150 is nicer than my ‘12 Lexus in every single way except for fuel economy. I would easily DD one.

Odd, I don't feel really worked up. Text based communication certainly has its drawbacks though. LOL
I wanted a pickup truck so I could put a cap on the back, drive it on the beach and have a place to crash out while I soak some lines out in the surf. It's also be nice not to have to angle the fishing poles over the top of the passenger seat, or use a rod holder on the roof rack.
What I have is an SUV so I can drive four people out on the beach and spend the day keeping the kids from murdering each other with the recovery equipment.
It's also pretty good for towing the boat, or a derelict car on a trailer. A truck would be, too, but I could afford a used SUV and couldn't afford a crew cab truck unless it was 30 years old.

Making things difficult in this case means that of course there are dozens of ride-heights probably in 1/2” increments between a Protege5 and a 1/2 ton 4x4. Am I expected to try each one and see if I like the view? Not to mention a stock 1/2 ton 4x4 is no where near what you described as “extreme”.
Why do people tend to buy AWD vehicles who rarely need the capability? Why do people buy 400+hp vehicles when 200hp is plenty for the majority of the time? Why do people like fancy interiors when cloth and manual windows are just fine? Why do people prefer paying more for high maintenance Euro vehicles when domestics and Asian imports get the job done for less $? Why do people buy more house than they need, or pay several hundred dollars for a new smartphone every couple of years when it makes calls/texts and takes them to the same internet just as well as the smartphones 10 years ago? Why shell out for fancy meals out when they can cook at home?
People see value in all of these things, even if some of us don't. It boils down to needs/wants and most people want what they want. We're individuals. Complaining about the individuality of people is a silly waste of bandwidth.

If somebody made a crew cab 4 cylinder diesel the size of a Taco/Frontier with a manual transmission. I'd strongly consider it since I drive over 60 miles a day.

I have a friend that owns a diesel performance shop. He has a crew cab dually 4x4 duramax. This year he broke into the 9's.
Edit; I missed the stock part of the above post. The 9 second dmax is not very stock.

Minus the manual choice, isn't that the diesel Colorado?
I have had a truck of some flavor or another since high school. Currently have a FJ Cruiser which I love but my next DD will be another truck because bed. This weekend I borrowed my friends F-350 diesel with lumber rack. If you have the means I highly recommend it.
I couldn't muster the courage to plow through every post in this thread, but one part of the truck SUV thing is that we have so much crap to haul around now. When I was a kid, we'd head off on a 2-week vacation in a Volvo 544 - sometimes with a roof rack, sometimes not. Now an overnighter is an excuse to pack for the next assault on the North Pole. Bikes, SUPs, kayaks... and that's just the stuff without motors. Face it, Outside of congested cities, big is usually good. And inside big cities, other than parking, big isn't so bad either.
I don't DD my truck because it gets 13 MPG and I drive 75 miles a day, but I will never be truckless. Mine is 25 years old and I work the living hell out of that thing. Most of its driving has a 275 gallon water tank in the bed. Sometimes firewood and brush hauling. If it dies or rusts in half, I'll ditch it and immediately buy another. And it will have an 8 foot bed with 4 feet between the wheel wells. Way too useful to settle for anything else.
