Since its introduction a quarter of a century ago, the VW Rabbit chassis has become one of the most popular cars in the world, from the utilitarian diesel-powered pickup to the sporty GTI and Cabriolet models. However, while the Rabbit was getting all of the attention, its broth…

I really enjoyed this article. As the owner of 7 Sciroccos, 3 of them being Warren Mosler's SCCA race cars, 2 1988 16V run in SSB class and the other a 1984 8V in ITB class.

The only upgrade I'd like to do for racing is changing out the 2 fuel pump system to a single intank fuel pump.

Just to be a weenie (and accepting that there are a lot of weird errors that can definitely be attributed to OCR) the Passat that the Corrado was loosely based on was a B3 chassis (specifically the VW B3 chassis; Audi and VW had different B3s).  The B2 chassis was the VW Quantum/Passat/Santana and the Audi 80/4000/Coupe GT/ur-quattro/Sport Quattro.

I say this as the B2 is dear to me for many reasons smiley

A lot of interchangeability exists between the A2, A3, and VW B3 chassis, people used to raid B3 Passats at the junkyards for 16v engines and something tells me that they all had the Plus suspension with its wider track, so people grabbed their subframes and rear beams for their Golfs.

Another neat bit of Corrado trivia is that they apparently all had the floorpan to accept the B3 Syncro drivetrain.  The Syncro rear suspension mostly bolted up to any A2/A3 rear beam's mounting points but the tunnel was different to accommodate the driveshaft.  Apparently, VW was future-proofing for an AWD model that never happened.  Man, what could have been!

This reminds me that car-part overconsolidated some things.

When I got my A1 GTI, I set about looking for a Scirocco 16v engine.  It's different from the 16v GTI because the intake manifold goes the other way on the A1 chassis. Fuel distributor is on the right for the A2 and left for the A1.

All 16vs that I could find from a search were from GTIs even though I was searching for Scirocco.

Literally bought a Scirocco the day before the email arrived with this TBT. Talk about serendipitous timing.

An all-wheel-drive Corrado sounds like an absolute riot.

I aquired a '88 16V Scirocco in 2009 that I then built for Improved Touring A. SCCA later allowed the car to run in B class.  The main problem I had is that when I finally got the car running as well as could be expected the fuel distributor took a dump. Try finding a shop that rebuilds a part that is 30+ years out of date! CIS works great when it works but when it dies you don't really have an option when racing in IT.

We rebuilt one a bout four years ago. Wasn't too bad. Just need to get the correct sealant to put it back together so it doesn't leak all over the place. Ask me how I know.

Wow, cool to hear that one of Warren Mosler’s VW is still out there. Have any pics?
