My first thought would be to get some old beetle wheels and strip the paint off of the calipers. Incognito. But on second thought, I don't know if I'd be able to do that if I was using my own money...

This has some relevance to me in that I was measuring up a BMW 318 to fit under a 1967 Volvo Amazon.
Where the unibody graft runs into trouble is in the pedal placement department. More often than not, you are slicing away width in order to get the classic bodyshell over the later subframe. Something has to give, and unless you can relocate the pedals inboard by a similar amount that you narrowed the subframe, it can get "weird".
