The C-130's I fly have heating elements in the windshields- a very fine grid of copper wire. Works like a charm- although I'd guess it'd be expensive as hell to make an automotive version.

I've always been under the impression that the reason you don't see grid/film defrost in automotive windshields is because cell phones dont agree with them.

We had a Range Rover test vehicle a while back with a windshield defroster like that. Personally, I hated it. I found my eyes trying to focus on it.
We didn't tell Scott about it. After a minute of driving, his mind was blown. Really. Pow.
