Im not a big fan of start-clutch operation in most DCTs (or CVTs) but most people don't notice it. I moved a '12 focus around a couple hours ago and noticed it right off the bat. I wouldnt consider it a dealbreaker by any means but if you actually spend a lot of time in stop and go id at least call it a 'factor'. If the slight chatter of the start clutch engaging from a stop bothers you, it would bother you 100 times a day in traffic.
Test drove a Mazda3 grand touring and a Mazda6 touring today. Both were quite nice. Compact cars have come a long way, but I'm still erring on the 6 in red with black leatherette interior. Gotta get up to the Ford dealer today.
Huh... MSRP on a Focus ST 2.0 w/ 6sp, heated leather recaros and XM is $28k. That can surely be had for $25k with the way Ford hands out cookies.

Ford has been having really good incentives lately on pretty much everything. If you can get X-plan pricing, it's even better. I was seeing base Focus ST's for right around $21k. That is a lot of car for the money.
Much rather drive a Golf R vs the Focus ST...
Cars I've driven recently that were surprisingly OK: Elantra, Fusion, CR-Z, Altima, Crosstrek, and you're right on the line for a base FRS or BRZ.

Don't forget about Mazda S-Plan pricing for us racers and 'racers'. You get the car at dealer cost. No fuss.

From what I've heard, S-plan pricing generally isn't that great compared to the deals you can get doing it the normal way. I'll check it out though.
