She may have famously sung “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz”, but legendary singer Janis Joplin personally drove an unmistakably wild 1965 Porsche 365C 1600 Cabriolet. This December, Joplin’s iconic Porsche will be offered as a star attraction at RM Sotheby’s exclusive Driven by Disruptio…

Very cool but it should stay at the RRH of F for all to see and where it belongs.

I saw that in person when I lived in Cleveland in 1996. About 5 years ago I was in downtown LA and I saw it again. The car, or a replica, was on display in the foyer of the Grammy Museum.

I am sure it will bring fairly $$ to someone.

I don't know. It is cool and all. .. . . . I guess. . .. . . But to me someone ruined a perfectly good Porsche. First thing I would do is have it re painted. Just not my style I guess.

If I had the money, It would be cool to win the auction and drive it back to the Rock and Roll hall of fame so it could go back on display. That is not a car you can drive anywhere, at least it will be safe there

Yeah, it's a helluva significant artifact. It would be a shame to hide it away from the public.

As for repainting it, I can't give that comment enough facepalms. The psychedelic paintjob (as well as the owner who commissioned it) are why this car is going to fetch ungodly money when it sells.

Re-paint the Last Supper so we can have a fresh canvas.

Here are some more pictures of it---it was originally Dolphin Grey, not white, and came from the Factory with a rollbar. And, despite the press releases, it's actually an SC, as indicated by the chassis and engine numbers.

For the same reason I never liked Janis Joplin's music. When I hear it on the radio it makes me cringe. Same thing with that car. It makes me cringe.

Hell I never liked those BMWs that have those weird paint jobs. Never understood the obsession people have with those either. I look at those and think the same thing. Someone ruined a perfectly good BMW.

I know there are people that love these things and if it makes them happy good for them. But don't expect the entire world population to think that they are the be all and end all of automotive design. They are not. They are just one small part of it that is liked by a small minority.

I love the art cars. I think it can make a normal looking car much more interesting, fun, and personal. I may not like all of them but I generally do like them. If the owner has done it themselves that is like a 10x cool factor bonus.

I would love to make one of my own cars an art car, but if I do the painting, it really will just look like a giant turd. Have to talk to some artist friends.

I guess art cars are very similar to race livery? flames? racing stripes? what say ye?

Nope. They are art and that is by its very nature extremely subjective. Most race cars livery are driven by advertising and although some may call that art as well it is really driven by a completely different need and that is $$$$$$ not art.

"Art cars" are just a canvas that someone painted on. It is like graffiti. Some of it makes things look worse not better. But as time moves on some Graffiti is now considered art. Again it is a very subjective thing.

Look at a Picasso. I mean really???? Is that a good painting? It looks more like a bad acid trip.

I put most "Art Cars" in the same dumpster.

I think that Picasso is fantastic----- of course I also love Janis's music and would rather have that 356 than any other. To each his own....one man's treasure is another man's trash..... and all that.

I'd also like to see it retained by a museum, or the RRHF. It would be a shame to see it scurried away in some private collection. That car got a ton of press, and was an icon of the 60's.

So as long as you are selling your art it is good art? I agree that art is very subjective, and personal, I just don't really see the ideological difference between any 2-d visual extras you can add to a car. Have you ever added anything similar to race livery to one of your cars even though you were not funded at all for it?

Just like you don't prefer Picaso, I may not prefer 'MARTINI' plastered all over a car. I might like flame jobs, you may not. We can agree to disagree here. I'm just trying to promote an alternate point of view.

"Ruined" as a concept is not so subjective. And if it's the last of it's kind and then changed, you might have a point about it being "ruined.' But if it's one of a whole load of mass produced products that is changed, then it's not "ruined." and in the car world, if it's mechanically incapable of being driven anymore, then you might also have a case about it being "ruined." But merely being painted differently than you would do? Not "ruined." Simply not to your tastes. But... if you took a valuable original painting like this and changed it to suit your tastes, there might also be a case for you ruining it from that point.

Do I like the paint job? Not my taste. Do I like Janis Joplin's music? Not my taste. Do I understand the appeal of both? Absofrigin'loutlely. And I feel sad for you if you don't at least understand the appeal of things outside your favorites.

So this is about me now? Hummmmmmm. Really did not realize that. I am just sparking a bit of discussion. Of course I understand that people have different tastes. Really???? I come off that that much of a narrow minded a-hole? Sorry you see it that way. I am just poking the wasp nest a bit here string up some trouble to get people talking/typing.

I will turn this around and say that if people are not willing to accept that some people don't like there art cars that is also sad.

I feel so un loved. .. .
