I should also mention that I have a few bags for tools too. I have one that holds my welding stuff: hammer, welpers, metal cutting discs/blades, gloves, magnet things, etc. I have another that I pack up with whatever I need for a job. The bag is nice for taking minimal tools for a specific task: plumbing stuff, junkyard trip, electrical project, etc. They are light and can have everything you need right there. Just don't forget to grab your stuff before leaving.
I really like these but I had to get two of them, one for metric and one for SAE. Last year's black Friday sale was almost half price.
My first real tool set was a craftsman very similar to this one:
Crafstman Set
I bought in '99 or so. I've added a second hand me down metal toolbox for odds and ends that don't fit in the Craftsman case. Its done a reasonable job of helping me keep all the sockets only thing I've had to do is make a piece of cardboard to go between the clam shell to hold the sockets in place.
edit Black Friday is coming up and you can guarantee some deals.
I hate my tool box situation. Three hip boxes crammed full. I may pull a trigger on a cart this weekend
I've seen them all come and go And have Snap-on Mac Matco, But my To-Go Box's are 40 year old Craftsman metal and are beat to heck with craftsman tools inside,Beggin' for more.
To me, anything with designated slots works for about 1 minute, until I need to add a new size or I pick it up when its not latched and 1000 pieces roll under the car.
I'm using these rails from Craftsman because they hold sockets securely, the same rails can be used for all three sizes, and you can buy more clips as needed. I can store them neatly in my tool chest, or throw them in a tool bag on the run. I found them on clearance and picked up what I should need for a lifetime.
For drawers, I liked the idea of these:
I love the quick identification of size, but I don't need long and short together. What I wanted was metric and SAE together. Searched high and low and couldn't find them anywhere. Until after I bought the Craftsman set above, then I saw a set on a clearance rack at Home Depot for 80% less then anywhere else. Metric one side, SAE the other. Doh!
An to the OP, check out GearWrench. I picked up a complete set a while back that includes SAE and Metric in one box. Has two wrenches, shallow and deep sockets, small bits, odd stuff....everything. It's my go-to if I don't know what I'll need, like going to a friends house to get their tractor "working again".
Not mine, can't find a photo of mine.
