I am thinking of going to the Rolex Grand-Am race at the NJ motorsports park this weekend. If I do go, I will only be able to go for Saturday, will the supporting and qualifying events on Saturday be worth the $22 admissions price? I've been spoiled by free spectating at more grassrootsy events. Also, does any one have any advice for bringing young children to an event like this? I would like to bring my 2 1/2 yo son. Will we need ear plugs, or would ear muffs be better for him? Thanks. Andrew.

Go and have fun. I would think that a 2 1/2 year old would be more comfortable with ear muffs. Last year I brought my kids who were much older (7 and 11) and my younger son had fun, my older one was bored for much of the time. I don't think the $22 admission fee for Saturday only is too bad. Give it a try.
Its awesome. $22 is a decent price and you have a lot of access to wander around and pester drivers.
Kids under 12 are free. Bring a raincoat though...
the cars arent really that loud, I went to the Daytona race last year, and they were about the quietest racing I have ever been to. (ALMS at Road America, and Belle Isle, IRL at Belle Isle, and Formula 1 at Indy, along with a handful of NASCAR events...) then again, I didn't use ear protection at the F1 race, and I loved it.

I started taking my son to Mid Ohio when he was about your sons age and the ear muffs worked out well. I was worried he would not like them but there was never any trouble at all.
We were standing in like to get a shirt signed by the Flying Lizard drivers they were passing out foam ear plugs, now those are the only thing he wants to use.
Be sure and bring plenty of snacks, sunscreen and a hat for him (that was the only way my wife would let me take Ian) and be prpaired to have fun. If you can swing it I would also recomend getting a paddoc pass. Ian loves looking at the cars up close and he has been able to sit in just about everything, the race teams seem to love letting kids get in the cars.
To my suprise I have found that I have more fun going with my son, who is 6 now, than with my car friends. It is a great bonding time and we are making memories we will both remember for the rest of our lives. Besides, any time you get to spread the car flu around it is time well spent.
thanks for the advice guys, I picked up some cheap ear muffs at HF, but unfortunately we were not able to go due to the weather today; Mrs happyandy didn't think that I had enough sense to keep little happyandy out of the rain. We are going to try again for the formula X weekend in June.
I wished I saw this earlier. The only rain we go all day was about 10 minutes worth during the Speed GT race. Besides MX-5 Cup and ALMS, I think every closed wheel pro-series was running today. Looking at car counts in the SWC ranks, this might be the last time too . I think Koni Cup is more exciting to watch than the Rolex cars as well.
The track had way more grandstands this time, and they finally got grass to grow in around the place.
$22 for a days worth of entertainment, (plus getting to look at/hear racecars all day) sounds like a bargan to me. Have you been to the movies lately?!?
