I had this problem at lunch today where I'm driving along, and from the back of the Sammy I get this horrific grinding, scraping noise that cycles at wheel speed. With each awful scrape the vehicle decelerates a bit. When the noise happens the handbrake feels tighter. It lasts for a few seconds while driving and randomly reappears. Rocks in the wheel drum right?

That'd be my guess.

Or the friction material on the shoe has come unbounded. Worth a look.

Shoes are brand new, hope they're still good because they replaced another set of new shoes that were ruined by a brake fluid leak.

I've had brand new brake shoes come apart on me and cause the same symptoms you're describing. Of course I've been driving British cars for years so I've also had springs, adjusters and emergency cables break inside the drum and cause the same issues.

I had that happen except pretty much the way described. It really sucked when the other one let loose on the way home and the pedal went to the floor on Clyde Morris Blvd...

On drums, I would bet a broken spring. On disks, I would bet a rock.

I had a Samurai, with the exact same symptoms. Pulled it apart and it was busted ebrake retaining hardware.

I attended school at ERAU Daytona (also where I discovered GRM in the library). I suppose a state would have helped but anyone familiar with Daytona International Speedway knows what I'm talking about

not from Fla, but I'm familiar with Clyde Morris Blvd … it's my way out of town after the Rolex, instead of trying to make a left out of the track parking and then the hr+ wait to get on I 95 … plus there's a Shell (which I use most of the time) at the intersection where I get on the interstate …

I was just wondering if there was a CMB in CA

Stranger things have happened. I came into a turn a little hot on the way home last week and "hit the berm" to scrub speed/push through the turn. Rear passenger wheel went into a big gravel-hole, and immediately the brakes on that wheel (disc) started making horrific noise. Has happened a couple times since then. I need to pull the wheel this weekend and take a look.
