So my current auxiliary fuel tank in Big Red is junk. I’ve fixed it twice and it’s leaking again and I’m not fixing it a third time, so a friend gave me his lightly used 105 gallon aux tank that he didn’t use anymore.
I want to do something a little different. I would like to run separate inline filter for the auxiliary tank. For some reason GM decided on a single fuel filter that they put in a place where you have to remove the inner wheel, while the other Big brands have two. On top of that, a quality filter is is $60+, so I want another one to help out with filter longevity.
So, I already have a NAPA 70 gph fuel pump plumbed in between the tank and the filler neck on my truck, so my question I have is, do I plumb the filter before or after the pump?
This is the unit I’m looking at:
IFJF Fuel Filter/Water Seperator
I think I would have it before the pump but micron size needs to be bigger than if placed after the pump. Especially with diesel, I’d want the water separated before any pump in the system as the ulsd has zilch for lubricant anymore like yesteryear.
Is the existing fuel filter going to be bypassed when you're running from the aux tank,? I assume not, so you're really looking at a pre-filter to protect the pump from any bits that make it out of the tank. A few years ago I completely redid the entire fuel system in my Cummins, and I added a small pre-filter between the tank and the inline pump. It was a "fancy" one meaning it was that swank anodized blue with AN fittings (which I was using every where else). Might have been an Earls? Anyway, about 18 months after I went through all that, I started losing fuel pressure, and after much flailing about, it turned out to be aforementioned swanky pre-filter. Running the pump output to my calibrated bucket, the flow would be fine for about 10 seconds and then gradually start falling off. I still have no idea what was going on with that stupid filter.
I tossed it and went with a decidedly more industrial bronze-bodied dealio from McMaster with an easily removable filter element. 2 years in and it's worked great.
The link seems like way overkill for just a pre-filter. If you want to do the separator though that's a different story.
In reply to NorseDave :
Yes I want it for the water seperator. This is a 105 gallon auxiliary before my main tank on my truck. Being able to filter and separate the water would be beneficial to the longevity of my main filter. Plus in the winter, water has a tendency to freeze up my auxiliary fuel pump.
