How hard is it to replace one of these? I have a possible lead on a 98 that otherwise is in in excellent condition with complete maintenance history. The part looks to be less than $100. The car is running at the moment. The current owner stopped driving it due to it starting to make noise.

I don't remember the details but search member cutter67. He recently bought a big BMW and got into the motor and posted about it.

There are threads with pictures on them over at e38.org. It's an involved job, but a lot of guys on the board there have DIY'd it.

The big thing is getting the main pulley off to get the front covers off. Other than that, it's all right up front. And yeah, the parts are cheap (you can get the complete kit with gaskets and everything over at oembimmerparts.com).

I didn't have to do it to mine, though when the engine was out I contemplated tidying that up for future peace of mind.
