I know Consumer Reports is rightly more of a punchline around here, but maybe some mainstream love will spur on other manufacturers to make some competitors. Maybe it will give Mazda some courage not to compromise with the next Miata. And maybe Nissan could sober up and give it another try

I am still waiting for an MX-5 tintop/fastback to come out alongside the Miata

Low-horsepower closed-roof two-seaters have a small, small market.

I'd like a fastback, but would have to let someone else drive it for the first 15 years

As the owner of an MGB GT and a FRS and past Miata owner, I have to say it would be a great toy, but bad business move. The love for such a device is strong, but the pool of buyers very limited.

Like the current Miata and the FRS, it would be primarily a 3 season car, but without the appeal/option of going topless.

I'd like to see this also, however I understand why it wouldn't happen anytime soon.

I wonder how possible it would be to design the car such that they could offer a mountable hardtop that involves removing the trunk lid and turns the car into a liftback.

Far more likely is a version that has a hardtop that will retract into the trunk quickly and easily so you can be both a coupe and a convertible. Bonus points for not affecting trunk volume.

Oh, wait...

You drive a hard bargain... but I'd take a high-horsepower closed-roof two seater from Mazda.

unevolved, if the next RX7 is anything like "an ND Miata with a 16x and a permanent roof", you and I will be competing to buy the first one imported.

You can have the first one. I'll take sloppy seconds on that one.

I would have bought an RX-7 if it looked more like a Miata and didn't have a rotary. I understand why they did it how they did it, but they managed to build two cars that weren't quite what I wanted.

I'm a few years older than you, but do I really drive like an old fogey now?
