Holy E36 M3 the want is real, but like anything fun we don't get it in the states.

Who would've thought Toyota would bring back rally homologation specials?

God. DAMMIT. Toyota.

... though admittedly, they'd be starting from scratch with that car here in the states.

Looks like the same specs size/power wise as the original STi.

Although 268hp from a 1.6l THREE has to be odd.  I mean, yeah the engine is probably lighter and easier to package than a four, and 1.6l is the size of WRCar engines... but those are rules dictated to be inline fours.  And there's no homologation at all for WRC.  Interesting.

The drivetrain sounds very similar to the STi as well, torsen front and rear diff and electromechanical clutch center, in a lighter vehicle with shorter wheelbase that sounds like a recipe for killer RallyX vehicle.  That thing would sweep Stock AWD no problem.

That is a good point that its not really a homologation vehicle but along the same spirit.

They'd sell more of these than Supras in the US, but which car do we get.

More teasing. I can't say I disagree with this statement.

"The Toyota GR Yaris Is More Exciting Than the New Supra"

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a30469781/toyota-yaris-gr-supra/

And MAKINEN helped develop the car!!!

"Just a little thread with some extra background on the #GRYaris. A huge amount of the car's development was done in Finland with our WRC team, led by Tommi Makinen. Chief Engineer worked closely with the team, who had numerous demands, because this car sets many of the parameters for the next gen WRC car. For example, that's why the roof is so low (relates to aero). CE says that he reckons he was able to grant 90% of Tommi's requests, despite them being way outside what would normally be considered possible for a new production car. Asked what he couldn't do he just smiled at us. The WRC drivers were all heavily involved in car development too, and in fact two of them were responsible for some dramatic early changes which I can't tell you about unless you buy me a pint. Ends."

So I guess there is your answer for why its a  pseudo homologation special, it "sets parameters" for next WRC car like roofline.

Is this the closest thing to a production rally car in recent history? And no, the Focus RS doesn't count, I worked on the development team and it had little to no rally influence.

Indeed, Ford had switched to the Fiesta before the FoRS was around.  Which is why I was awaiting the rumored Fiesta RS.

We did get the homologated parts kit for the Fiesta, at least.  I've seen them up close and they are pretty trick, if you like front wheel drive.

Can I just say, this thing BERKELEYS. I can't wait for them to be legal to import up here in 15 years.

They have the same underpinnings as the new frs (supposedly). So awd brz anyone?

....so how do we make a cheap Yaris hatch do the same here in the States?

In reply to FuzzWuzzy :

Probably not cheap but a possibility buy a Yaris here with a good title, buy a Gazoo that's been totalled and import as parts. Install parts on titled shell and there you have it a maybe legal Gazoo Yaris.

Complete with unicorn parts, zero aftermarket support, and a guaranteed headache inducing install, which will cause future buyers of said car to question the shortcuts that will inevitably be taken to make this happen

If the estimated price is under $50k US then it looks worth it.
