I keep seeing CRZ in that rear quarter.

good luck with that..........
I keep seeing CRZ in that rear quarter.
Except a CR-Z looks good.
The first thing i thought when i saw this 86 wagon thing was "Good thing i don't have to get my hopes up for no reason since i dont actually like it!".
Apparently this thing has got more than one wagon/hatch enthusiast in total apathy.
I do think the thread title is on to something with "just pissing people off". This seems like a poor PR play when everyone realizes its too late in the product cycle for this to mean anything. What are they actually fishing around for feedback on? I'm not sure what they were considering making a hatch out of if they can't get people to buy a sports car that already holds a track day's worth of equipment to begin with.
A) That hatch looks uselessly small.
2) I bet when it's closed, the back window is the size of a mail slot.
III) The proportions just aren't that great.

How about we compromise on "A CR-Z looks better".
Count me in the thumbs-up category. Practically any car short of an exotic works for me in shooting brake form from an aesthetic standpoint as well as a functional one. But that's largely a result of years spent as a surfer/kayaker/bicyclist, and I always wanted to drive sports cars but was forced into larger vehicles for their interior volume. Once my son get's his license I'll be sorely tempted to get a Z3 coupe.
This reminds me, the missus told me this week that she would like an IS300 Sportcross as a future daily driver. May have to travel to hunt one of those down.

you really don't...... and back to my comment above... after over a year with an IS300 Sport Cross I can say without a doubt it was the stupidest thing I've owned... I can get far more stuff in my Corolla then I could the Sport Cross. 32" TV - nope... lawn mower - nope... just about anything that comes in a square/rectangular box will ot fit in the back... or the side doors.... I'd be willing to bet you can fit a bigger box into the sedans trunk then you could the back of the Sport Cross......
As to the GT86 shooting brake... if it opened up further into the roof like the Veloster maybe.... but the back of that looks almost useless......
Can we all agree to stop using the term "shooting brake"? If you insist on not calling it a wagon or a hatchback we can start calling them something else, like a fudgyplop or something.
Here's the best shooting brake ever. I'm going to keep calling it that just to mess with gearheadmb.

Imagine that car with a set of Centra 6s...
Subaru made a better version of a BRZ Shooting Brake in 2013, the Cross Sport Design. The off-roadness is neither here nor there but back half and hatch look appropriate. The aussie concept that started this thread just has something goofy about it.
Actually I prefer the Aussie, because the Subaru one has a proportionately smaller greenhouse which is my least favorite styling trend of the last 15 years.
FWIW, one of my friends was all set to buy a BRZ until he discovered that it was a coupe, not a hatchback. No hatchback meant no sale, he needed the ability to fold the seat down and fit bulky items in the car.
Normally I'd be all over a shooting brake, but that thing just doesn't work. I see some Mazda 3 mixed in there with the CRZ. The silver thing is way better.
So much auto design now is marred by gratuitous creasing and angular lumps that are neither (even fake...) functional or remotely aesthetically pleasing in weird attempts to make cars look like some anime creature. I still blame Chris Bangle. Hopefully something better rolls in.. I do like the Ford/Volvo aesthetic.

I have to agree that the Sportcross was a pretty poor execution of a wagon.
