I would argue that it's cheaper to just buy a C5 instead of getting a different car and then upgrading the brakes and tires and then dealing with the chassis's other shortcomings. Used, not show quality C5s are not that expensive. Who cares about fraying leather or curb rash on the corners for a trackday car? Use those negatives to your advantage.

But then, I'm looking at it from the perspective of getting as much track time as possible with minimal fuss, as opposed to wrenching a lot.

If you want an already prepared car, I would like to sell my Miata or 944Spec race car. I'm in Mendocino, CA. Sounds like the Miata isn't for you. The 944 is a race car and would need to be towed to events. Also going to cost a little bit more than $5000, but will not require any upgrades or anything once you get it.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Going to check out a few MR2 SCs in SOCAL that fit my budget as well as a couple X1/9s.....

On craigs list there doesn't seem to be any Alfas around there but i'll look around since a couple suggested them.

There is a TE72 corolla with 4age engine swap that i'm going to check out as well as a couple of 944s.

These MR2s and Fiat interests me the most though, i like the small lightweight short wheelbase car idea. I feel like that is going to be the most fun.

+1 for the Datsun. They are cheap, fun & reliable. Around here (western MA) there are several on CL for $2000 or less
