Like the title says, Travis Pastrana pulled the wrapping paper off of his new Subaru GL Wagon gymkhana car today, and it is wild. As a fan of the old EA82 Subarus, I'm pretty excited about this one, even if there likely isn't much EA82 left to it. These cars are pretty much ignored by all but a small contingent of hardcore off-roaders so it's cool to see one used for a build of this caliber.
I am loving that he kept the roof racks. Anyone know what it is powered by?

I haven't heard the mechanical specs, but I'm going to guess it's the same as his STi gymkhana car, which used a Vermont Sports Car-built 2.3L boxer built from a 2.5L block with a 2.0L crank and made around 860hp, and used a Sadev 6-speed sequential.
I'm not upset by this in any way shape or form. Travis is a great person irl and that's just more fun than I can comprehend.

Oh, these should be so lucky as to have a 2.2L. They had a SOHC 1.8L with sub-100hp, depending on whether it was carbureted, SPFI or MPFI. And the factory turbo version only made 111-115hp. I had one, it went any where you wanted it to go but very slowly.
This just warms my cockles.
This thing is fantastic. I love all of it and agree it needs something on the roof rack.

So cool. I worked at a Pier 1 Imports in high school and the rich ladies who bought stuff there often drove GL-10 wagons. This was before luxury SUV's were a thing. I remember being impressed with all of the badges on the rear door and window when loading them up. 4WD, Turbo, electronic differential, I forget what else.

My Loyale had the 3-speed automatic which with, 3.90:1 gears and a 23" tire, meant it absolutely screamed going down the road, but offroad, you engaged the 4-wheel drive and it would drive through mud or snow that was up to the rocker panels or over the top of the front bumper and it. just. would. not. stop. Absurdly capable little machine. More like an enclosed side-by-side than a car. Stand out features on it were the oddball 4x140 bolt pattern (shared only with a Renault 405/505) and the parking brake that worked the front calipers, as well as the sharpest turning radius I've ever encountered on a car.
Also, credit goes to the great Khyzyl Saleem for the exterior design. You know, the guy that does all the wild cyberpunk car renders

I definitely like it better than Hoonicorn. I actually liked the Hoonitruck better than Hoonicorn, and I have always been disappointed how little we've got to see the Hoonitruck. It did the second Climbkhana and it was in Gymkhana 10, but that was the one where they used all the different vehicles so it only showed up for a portion of that, and that was it. Hoonicorn has been in multiple Gymkhanas, the first Climbkhana, and then has been trotted out for one of the Hoonigan Burnyard Bashes as well as two seasons of Hoonicorn Vs. The World (one season with Ken Block driving, one with 14 year old Lia Block driving). I wonder if he doesn't enjoy driving the Hoonitruck as much.

He didn't offer me a beer, but it was breakfast. He walked in to the donut area at the hotel we were at, grabbed a donut, and sat down next to the kids who were watching nitro circus in TV, and gave them a whole story about it. Apparently the red dune buggy things are the only things they never broke.

Seeing as it appears to be another drift car, not an offroad one, I imagine that won't change too much.
Very cool though. It's great to see such an obscure car being featured. Much more interesting to me than if he did the same with something new.
I expected the GL wagon of the Brat-era.
But I m not disappointed by this nod to the old Ski Team edition

It is the same body, just the last ones had quad headlights.
As someone who had an '82 GL 4WD wagon, this warms my heart as well. I'd love to get another one some day, although I agree - "quick" or "fast" it was not... although in 4WD, it could pull much more powerful RWD cars in the rain.
