Right after the Thanksgiving holiday, work is going to be shipping me off to just North of Portland, OR for three weeks. I like to poke around the U-Pull-It lots whenever work sends me out someplace new for an extended period of time, so I'm hoping to do so while I'm out there. Does anyone in that area have any suggestions for places to hit while I'm there? Thanks!

Start here:

U-Pull-It was changed to Pick-N-Pull a while back.

Then Google Salvage yards near Portland, OR as there are a bunch of other yards around, but I'm not sure how many allow you to poke around.

Perfect, thanks! It looks like there's about 4 within 50 miles of where I'll be (Woodland, WA), so that should keep me plenty occupied while I'm there.

Yep and if you're looking for specific stuff, there are a few of us in the area and we might see something and let you know or maybe even grab it for ya (or lend a hand if you need it).

There's several Harbor Freight stores around if you need cheap tools to pull the parts.

You can pull AMC parts out my back lawn 20 miles north of Woodland!

We also have an excellent "old school" junkyard across the river in Rainier, Oregon. Lots of 50's-80's stuff in there.

If you have any interest in domestic cars, this sounds like a fun place: http://www.allamericanclassics.com/

Amusingly, I may well be needing AMC parts somewhere down the line- I'm putting more serious thought that I probably should be to picking up an old Hornet to restore for my parents. Their first car was a Hornet, and I thought that getting one and restoring it for them would make a neat anniversary present.

My primary project is a 5-gen El Camino, so an old school junkyard might come in handy as well!

I literally have a shed full of Hornet parts...

If you know what you need, you can look by city-based region on car-part.com. What I like about it is they even list the price of the part. And they are usually wreckers that already have the part pulled. So you won't always be able to browse their yard. That's why I say, if you know what you are looking for.

There is a u-pull-it type place in Tigard, OR and Vancouver, WA I know for sure.

As a visitor with nothing specific in mind, picknpull is the only one worth visiting IMO. There are others still in business, but they're usually very spotty and/or specific and the rest got bought up by picknpull. You can search vehicle inventory on their website, so you at least have an idea of what to expect in terms of vehicle count and type. They also usually have big sales on holiday weekends, FWIW.

Let us know when you're coming out, I'm within a few miles of a couple of the yards and always have a junkyard toolbox ready to go.

In reply to Nashco:

Yeah, I generally figure the pick-n-pull type yards are my best bet. Half the fun for me is just wandering around and looking over the cars even if I'm looking for something specific. Generally the prices are lower too, and since I'm looking primarily for parts for a Challengr car, that definitely counts a good bit.

I'll definitely lt everyone know when I head out. At the moment it's shaping up that I'll be there for the three weeks following Thanksgiving, but I'll post more specifically when I will have the time to head out to look over cars.

Thanks!

The closest one is probably going to be Vancouver but it's on the smaller side. There is a big one in SE Portland on Foster Road and an even bigger one between Sherwood and Newberg west of Portland.

So, I'm now out here in the Portland area for the next few weeks on the trip as expected. If the weather is halfway decent tomorrow, I'm planning on going out and looking over the Vancouver Pick-N-Pull (since it's just down the street from my hotel, it seems...) and possibly heading over into Portland to check out some of the bigger ones. Regardless, I plan on stopping by and browsing through All-American Classics- that looks like it will be a very interesting place to go.

On the down-side, I was only able to bring a very, very small amount of tools along- had I brought the bag of tools I'd wanted to bring, my baggage would have been overweight. On the up-side, there's really very little that I really NEED at this point (G-body floor/console shift cable).

Welcome! I would get out and enjoy the weather today before it does "pear-shaped" tomorrow :)

Still, the cars will be full of water, so bring a change of clothes and some towels :)

If you'd like to get together for a beer, I'm sure I could find some time to grab a beer. I don't live too far from the PickNPull on Foster Rd. in Portland.

Unfortunately, I will be at work until it gets dark and the PNPs have all closed for the day, so I'll have to hope that tomorrow isn't entirely too bad weather-wise. I was also not really able to bring along my usual junkyard-crawling clothes, but I plan to hit a Goodwill on the way home to pick up at least a sweatshirt. I'm halfway figuring I'll mostly be just wandering around and looking vs. doing much pulling of stuff since I don't really need anything at the moment- and my tool compliment consists of a small (but versatile) GearWrench set, a screwdriver, and my Swiss Army Knife.

I'd certainly be up for getting together- I'm going to be here for another two weeks, and it's looking like unlike my usual offsite assignments that this one is going to involve no weekend overtime, so I'll have a lot more free time over the weekends to kill.

You're welcome to swing by my place and borrow my junkyard tool box and a shop jacket if you're my size. I'm very close to the North Portland picknpull. I'm swapping an engine in a Civic RT4WD for a friend tomorrow, so I won't be able to hang out tomorrow, but I can at least lend you some tools. Hit me with an email at nashco at gmail and include your phone number and we'll touch base.
