I don't care about the engine size for a loud exhaust. For a street car, too loud is too loud no matter how good it sounds or how much 'performance' it enhances. But some cars - the aforementioned unmuffled VQs, for example - just sound crappy with aftermarket exhausts. Size is not a factor in that.
What does bother me (a little) is typical small-bore automatic transmission street cars with loud exhausts. If you're trying to improve performance or show off your enthusiasm, for an economy car Step One is learning how to drive a manual transmission.
I'm not a fan of street cars with stupid loud exhausts.
I find the judging of how others chose to spend their money extremely petty. Any fun car in use is a win. I do prefer the sound of the 6th gen V6 Camaro to the V8. Let's think about this another way, how many bigger engine cars are garage queens which are rarely enjoyed? One person is better because they spent more than a yearly median income on a car that's driven 10 hours a year, so they then judge others?
I'm not a V8 guy, my brother used to go on and on about Top Fuel dragsters but c'mon they're obnoxiously loud and you have to rebuild them every 3/8ths of a mile. What good is that.
Now a 1500cc BMW turbo making 1000hp and spitting flames out the back, making lovely popping and sputtering noises......mmmmmm.
There is a guy on that regularly rides past my buddy's shop with a loud as hell pipe on his Honda Grom..........now there's a guy secure in his manhood.

No one cares about V6 driving losers. V8 drivers rule and are obviously the Alpha Males. I would never be caught dead hanging out with a V6 owner
I have 2 v8s, and one v6 car
Tge v6 car us tge loudest. By far. And uts faster than one of the v8s.
So, what does that make me? Alpha male or douche?

lol, take your thumbs up, don't spend it all in one place.
I think it's because in America we're blessed with an abundance of V-8 powered vehicles. So a V-6 engine with a nice sound really stands out.

You do understand my post was facetious and was meant to insult the "director" in the original post right?
I thought it was stupid to insult V6 owners the way he appeared to be.
My favorite thing about my mustang is the sound it makes. Stock 2.3 with a blowed up muffler. I can't explain it. "you got the 5oh?" No. "so you're planning to put a 5oh in there then?" No.
I do think about putting a performance muffler on though, as it would probably make it quieter.

I do completely understand that. I was really hoping you'd come up with a new category for my fast V6 car. The truck runs a teens if I'm lucky and has a 350 in it. The duster runs low 12 with a V8. The Miata runs high Thirteen's with a V6. And honestly I need to get a better muffler for the Miata.
Maby alpha douche?
The joy of the internet:
I should have been more obvious, we were joking about the V6 cars mufflers............the boss just came from several years of driving an Infiniti G35 Coupe. He also makes "Joe Dirt" comments about his Mopar ownership.
In reply to Tom1200 :
I resemble joe durt mopar land...
And my warpef sense of humor is not coming through very well today. See all please excuse me.
When I had my 150 horsepower 5.0 Ford LTD I would jokingly say "coulda had a V8!" every time I got passed by a V6 pony car.
Usually V6 pony cars with exhaust sound like butt only because people cut the muffler off and call it a day. V8 cars with the same treatment aren't much better.
What about in the 90's when the top tier American cars like the 5.0 Mustang had a ~240hp V8 vs now when lots of V6's make much more than that? Hell, 4cyl's can hit that number!
There is a KOTH V6 Mustang with a really fancy exhaust installed that sounds pretty good.
There is a VR6 KOTH Passat with the exhaust just cut off behind the cats that sounds glorious!
I don't care about the exhaust.
I do laugh when they start throwing on the higher trim badges, though. 325s with M3, v6 5th gens with SS, etc etc.
The muffler in my 5.8L powered campervan has a hole in it..............some guy told me it sounds really lumpy, what's in it?
My single cylinder Beta 520RS has a great exhaust note, very snappy, I wonder what kind of noise 8 of them running at once would make?
To a lot of folks, loud = cool, or that it gives the impression of power and they dont get that the tone is nails on a chalkboard to many.
i liked the sound of my old nissan truck, vg30 v6 with longtubes, "high flow" cat and flowmaster. V8 guys hated it. Oh well. Different strokes.
now the straight pipe on the street folks, thats something special.
I put a stock V8 exhaust on my V6 Firebird and it sounds nice. It idles and cruise quietly then has a little extra tone when opened up. Several people (some from this forum) have complemented me on it.
Volume and quality are two separate things. Sadly too many people sink to "louder is better".
Does turning up music you hate make it better?
aw614 said: V6 Mustang owners and VQ owners are guilty of crappy straight pipe exhausts ugh. lol
Yes! Those VQ things have to be some of the most awful-sounding things around.
I run into loud V6 Mustangs, too, albeit less frequently. Modular V8s with X-pipes are at least as bad an issue. Talk about ruining a really pleasant-sounding engine. Mustang people never miss an opportunity to put their own ruinous personal touch on something... SAD.
I've never heard a V6 that sounded good, why make it louder?
If we're talking inline 6 then that is an entirely different conversation.
@gearheadotaku OK I tried turning up Journey to 11 and yep I still hate. Whereas The Cramps "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns" came on the radio on the way home; it sounded great at 5 it sounded really great at 11.
