I may have the opportunity to get a Vanagon for the Soccer Mom class at the challenge. It has been decaying in a field for years and doesn't run- is FMV scrap value in this case or is it elevated since people want these for some stupid reason?

I would be seeing if they would pay you to take it away.
I don't think there I any kind of value for those. Then again i have not seen a running example of one in years.
vanagons have crazy values for running examples. Not as crazy as AC buses, but getting up there... especially westafalia conversions
This is a "friend of a friend" deal, hence why I ask FMV. I don't want the thing at all except as a potential challenge build, so I really don't want to drag it out of there and have everyone go "oh that's worth $2k, you're boned"
Id say that no engine and rough bidy from a field is 500 to 1000. So fmv at 500 should be reasonable.
I have seen running ones for $900 and $90,000, but I see them in pick and pull too, so I can't imagine anyone would complain about it being worth more than $500.
There's a big spread, and it's getting bigger as the value of the best ones is starting to really climb.
But a crusty tin top? I could believe $500 easily. Even less.
$500 seems like a lot to me for a non running, rusty VW van. I would think its value is closer to scrap value.
About 6 years ago, a friend bought a running air-cooled Westfalia for $500. It had spent some time parked in a field.
