My Father's G/f has a dead 740 turbo wagon with a good intercooler. my saab's stock intercooler makes some oilcoolers look big. the Volvo unit appears to be a similar size to the saab's radiator, so the temptation is high to see about using this intercooler in my 900.
Anybody have any info on these intercoolers.. regardless of price, would I be better off with a different model Volvo's intercooler or going aftermarket?
No useful info, but as A fellow 900 turbo owner I'm interested. What are the dimensions of the volvo unit? what is the diameter of the inlet outlet compared to stock? The stock unit is so small almost anything would be an improvement.
Volvo IC's are huge, great units. If you can make it fit, I would use it. I might be interested in the turbo off that 740, depending on the year.......
sadly the turbo is long gone. the car was converted to normally aspirated years ago by some mechanic.. but was still breathing through the ic
this is what it looks like though.

Wow, that's a terrible thing to do. Must have been a dog. I can't remember the CR for the B230FT, but my B21FT was like 7.5:1

Yeah it becomes a bit of a dog. I bought a 740 Volvo Wagon from a woman who had the turbo die so the mechanic just packed it full of high temp silicone. Low compression + immobile turbine = lots of exhaust restriction.
this one was just removed. it was funny to see an aftermarket cone filter on the intake side of the intercooler.
Probably saved her life.. she drives like a mad woman as it is. With more power, she would be dangerous
I put a small electric fan on my 86 900 intercooler. Worked quite well kept it cool while at a stoplight. I wasn't willing to cut the car for a 9000 intercooler.
The placement of that IC's inlet and outlet may make plumbing it in tricky, especially on the inlet side. My suggestion is to take the nose apart and see how you can make it work. Some people cut off the tow strap eye to get more room to run the tube from the compressor to the IC's inlet. If you do an image search for SAAB c900 intercooler swap you will see that most people use an IC with inlet and outlet at the bottom, or an EVO style IC.
I'm not saying that the 740's IC can't work, its just not one of the proven formulas.
One thing that I find frustrating is that reclocking the compressor outlet to a better angle for more direct routing to a FMIC on the c900 is just about impossible. (Because of the WG mount bracket). If it could be rotated from 12 o'clock to 5 or 6 o'clock FMIC hose routing could be nice and short.
