So I've got this old '65 Baja Bug sittin' in the garage, and no rallycross car.....I don't know what class they would put me in, as it has the body cut up with fiberglass baja kit, KYB gas adjust shocks, and a later model 1600 dual port engine. But I really don't care!! I've never rallycrossed before and thought it would be fun to take it out there and flog it. Any thoughts?

If they'll let you run, why not?

That's what I was thinking! I haven't found any local events so far (NW Arkansas/NE Oklahoma) so I may put some street tires on it and take it to Tulsa and autocross it for practice. I'm 45 yrs old and never have done any car racing other than bracket drags. Time to start. I used to race dirt bikes in enduro/hare scrambles and wish they had an "old fart" vet class like they do!

I found a website about 10-years ago talking about what basically amounted to "urban-trials" in Baja Bugs - hopping curbs, flying over embankments & such.

They sure look like they'd be fun, but I've sworn off ACWVs...

This runs at a bunch of our local events:

Not exactly a baja bug, but pretty close. I doubt it meets the letter of M2, but nobody cares. Thats probably where you'd get classed. If not, as long as what you have is safe, I suspect they'd let you run in an exhibition class. We've had rail buggys compete before.

It will definitely be safe, getting new steering components, and all new brakes this spring(NEW master cyl., shoes, cylinders, hoses,etc.). I'm not too worried about being "outclassed" as this is more of a learning experiance, and having some fun. Maybe compete against my teenage kids! How many drivers can one car have? Slowest time buys lunch!

Multiple people can race a single car here in so cal. Imagine that SCCA is not much different anywhere else.

From my limited understanding of the rules, the full fender Bug is legal but bobed fenders are not.

No one in their right fun-loving mind would protest a Baja Bug in M2 which is where it would be classed with the swapped engine, especially on the local level. The 2008 M2 national champ didn't appear to meet the letter of the rules (body-work wise) and nobody protested.

Show up at your next nearest rallycross and get your rear-engined dorifto on Yo!

My dream rallycross car IS a baja bug. I wouldn't protest it.

Heck, I'd cheer for it. Especially with multiple drivers competing for "not slowest" in the same car - there's your class right there.

If I could post pics from my phone I'd show you just how small my rear fenders are. I've actually slung mud on my hood with the rear wheels. But, the prospect of racing it makes me want to get it running again. 8)

So have I! And I have a full fendered car.

Not mine:

http://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/1649686041.html

Up for sale is a 1968 VW Beetle, has a 70's 1.6 Dual Port engine, unknown mileage, crank doesn't turn, black exterior, body is straight and little to no rust at all which is rare for this year. It has a baja fiberglass body kit installed, (extra wide fenders) front and rear including engine cover, comes with two engine cages, all windows are there, two new black seats, definitely needs floors, no back seat, comes with aftermarket gauges in dash that still need to mounted (head temp., oil temp, ……), extras are a box of repair manuals/books/beetle-related magazines, doghouse, extra front torsion/axle assembly, chrome exhaust tip, tow dolly, good for someone looking for a cool project car. No title, will only come with a bill of sale. Rolls nice and smooth. Will need to be towed or can use tow dolly it comes with if towing out of Mass. Needs Floors! Don't call me asking if it needs floors or how bad they are, do it the right way and replace them, no patch jobs please. You can buy 1/4 pans for $30-40 each. $500 If interested please call me: 413-459-1811 Marc

Mine might be a little tall, but that's just a matter of adjustment. Now...to talk the wife into yet another project.

<img src="1965 baja bug" /> Still a long way to go! This pic is after I finished sanding the body and started fitting the new fiberglass kit. Pan is real solid, but I will have to have some help from my old v-dub friends to help swap the IRS transaxle for the old swing axle. Never tried that by myself. Only in it for about $300 so far!

Where are the WOR events? I see a lot of Vermont plates. I used to go to the SCCV AutoX events in Vermont, but never got to do any RallyX while I was living up there.

WOR is Western Ohio Region. Usually the events are in the Dayton/Cincinnati/Columbus area, although the Columbus area ones are actually run by Ohio Valley Region.

Whats the deal with GRM always reading my mind? Whenever I start thinking about a new project/toy, a thread pops up about them. I'm on a bit of a baja bug kick in my mind garage now and this thread isn't helping.

I always wanted to take a formula vee and raise the suspension with some offroad tires and see how it would do at rallycross :)
