The dash light being on when the engine is not running is a good clue for a failed diode in the alternator.

Converted my dune buggy from 6 to 12v and did the same.

Fried the internal regulator inside the alternator.

Only gonna make that mistake once.

if the red light is on with the key off than no its the regulator but if the key is turned to the first detent (bus power) with the engine off this is normal the light is letting you know hay the bus is powered by the batery and your not charging it. also the low oil pressure light should be on. if the red light cimes on when demand is high but only then it points to belt tension. be forewarned if the light burns out your battery wont charge you will have to relamp it with a spare or barrow from another light in the instrument cluster they are all the same
