That's a 25 degree cold start with the high idle engaged.
My gas burners will make a lot of noise if I fire them cold and hold the revs at 150% of normal idle too! 
I realize you are in OR. There are also some parts of the country which will never see snow.
The Duramax is the only diesel truck I can stand next to while it is running and not realize it is a diesel.
Absolutely no disagreement on the Cummins or the Powerstroke. Different animals.
