10 years ago I took a welding class and bought a new Weldcote helmet. It has 4 flash sensors and replaceable sheilds for the glass. Was touted as a good "bang for the buck" unit. I liked it in my class, but now, years later its not so good. I use once maybe twice a year and all I can see is the arc, nothing else. Adjusted what i can but cant weld what i cant see!

Ideas?

I think they deteriorate.  I've bought one every five years or so, and use them weekly, I guess.  Not quite daily.

Does your shop have as much light?  Have you tried aiming a shop light at the weld area?  The newer helmets offer a lot better view of the rest of the weld area.

Yeah I put as much light on as I can. Guess I need more. Also on the bench you can get your face closer vs. Arms length when its on a car.

If you go to use it and it doesn't dim, it's bad.

Sounds almost too easy, I know smiley

You may be able to test this without welding, though.  Flashing lights are sometimes enough to set them off.

I used mine for the first time in 3 years to view the eclipse. It still worked fine.
