You have a $5000 budget to buy a car and mod the exhaust to win a "sexiest exhaust note" contest. Go.

Bonus points if it's not a miserable, unreliable turd when you're done. 30-year-old V12s, I'm looking at you.

MX-3 with the tiny V6?

Also the VWs with the VR6 sound really good uncorked too.

Another vote for the VR6.

93-97 LT1 F-bodies sound pretty good.

Modular Fords make good noises. So SN95/New edge Mustangs and MN12s. Preferably in 4v flavor if you shop well.

Ford 5.0 HO with H pipes, no mufflers. In my case it was a 1987 Lincoln MVII and I still miss that car just for the noise it made.

92-95 Ford Taurus SHO, Magnaflows for exotic sounding.

Alfa Romeo Spider with a glasspack for mechanical fuel injection big-bore 4-cylinder.

Early 5.0 Mustang (carburetored) with a cam with lots of overlap, cheap headers, and Blowmaster's for V8.

Best overall combo fo rme personally?

83-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, T3/T4 turbo with 3" dowpipe and full 3" single exhaust with straight-through muffler, manual boost controller, and a blow-off valve. You get pops, rips, snorts, and a much deeper rumble than you would think. Huh... That's in my driveway!

No contest the Alfa v6. I've raced against an Alfa (alfetta maybe?) and it was amazing sounding. Like six trumpets in tune as they shrieked past me.

Are there any Fiat Abarth 500s getting down there yet? Probably pretty ratty if there, but they sound really, really good.

I feel like any 2wd V8 pickup might be the easy button here, assuming you're into V8 noises.

WRX

Before someone waves the BS flag I just spotted one on Craigslist with over 250,000 miles on it for close enough to $4k to buy a really nice exhaust.

On the VR6 idea, I've spent the last year or so working on a 1995 MK3 VR6 and trying to make it sound good.  It's been a constant battle of cool noises vs drone.  When I had the exhaust sounding good the drone was usually unbearable.  I've tried a lot of things, getting an aftermarket downpipe (made even more drone) and trying many combinations of resonators, test pipes, mufflers, and glasspacks.  I've considered sound deadening in the trunk, but at this point I'm ready to cut my losses.  I also do daily battles with the idea of just getting a turbo.  There's a non-intercooled kit that runs around $3,500 that might change things up.  I've also thought about helmholtz resonators and j-pipes to cancel the drone, but not sure if it's worth it.

After spending a lot of time on this, I've come to a conclusion - I probably should have started with a MK4.  With just a catback and a magnaflow, they sound great.  There are a lot more pops and burbles.  Mine barely makes any and i hate it!  I had deleted the EGR system hoping for more power, but put it back on in the hopes of getting more pops and bangs.  That worked, but it's minimal.

The MK4's come in 2 varieties.  The 12V VR6 that ran until 2002 and the 24V that happened in a 2002 mid year refresh.

Here's a 12V MK4 example with just a catback:

Here's a 24V, also with just a catback.

This is the video that inspired my build.  I had the car sounding like this for a bit, but it was ridiculously loud and the drone was nasty.  It did sound amazing though! :)

Agree!

The sound of my Q45 with the rear-most muffler removed is pretty nice too.

4.5Ls of 4 cam V8 that revs to 7,400 is a good sound. $5k will buy you a pretty nice, pretty new one.

A 5.0 Ford would likely win this...

My other choice would be an early Boxster with a muffler bypass installed.  7k rpm flat six music is amazing.
