Any Audi 5 cylinder from the 80s or 90s. Turbo, NA, 10V, 20V, doesn't matter. Put a nice exhaust on any of them, and great sounds will be emitted.
Maybe easier to find, and almost as good, would be any VW Mk5 with the 07K 5 cylinder engine. Those are cheeaaapcheeaaap. Decent exhaust, and cue the music.

wut happened to the 5k budget?
Seriously. I wanna know where ya'll are getting $5000 flat-plane crank Lingenfelter V8s
Curtis posted the C7 so I went nuclear. My bad.
I'm not a Ford guy, but the 5.0 with Flowmasters is the way to go, in this price bracket.

Lexus LS400s make some pretty glorious noise with the mufflers removed. Also, I'm really partial to Honda J-series V6s, they have a great scream to them, so V6 5-speed Accord coupe as my other choice.
Seconded, for way under $5K. Straight piped LS400

Any liter bike! 12-14000rpms!
you can buy a dwarf car for $5k and it will have an R1 or GSXR 1000 engine. Definitely the best sound you can buy at that price.
can't say I ever found the GSXR to have a good sound. Too high pitched and screaming
I know what those words all mean but I don't comprehend the order they are in.

My friend had a New Edge with an X-pipe and Super 44s that sounded unlike any other Mustang I've heard. Really nice rumble down low and it shrieked up top. That car was a lot of fun. I miss it.
My SN95 was the quietest and tamest sounding axle dumped 2v ever. Subtle idle and still quiet at part throttle cruising but had a good tone on hard acceleration. Stock catted h pipe and the 2.25" Magnaflow Rumble 2 chambers (they were suspiciously cheap new, so I tried them). I did axle dumps because tail pipes on an sn95 are ugly.

Did ya read the "Welcome to the Club" email when you made SuperDork? It's all in the fine print...I would figure as a PowerDork you are up to $5k Porsches... ;)

OMG! How much compression and camshaft is behind that?
