the wife loves driving manual but is getting annoyed having to drive in traffic all the time.

she wants; reliable(as in don't have to worry over anything kind of reliable), good gas mileage(over 28mpg combined), 4 door sedan, auto, 2004 or newer, small to medium in size. under 5k dollars

looks good is a plus and no VW's she hates her current one because of the cooling system. also she don't want a BMW because my car is one and she sees me work on it all the time LOL.

Camry is always the answer when it comes to a non-car enthusiast wife and hassle free ownership.

Mazda 3 is a great choice that meets all of your criteria and is still fun to drive.

Acura TL or TSX, size / budget preferences depending.  TSX is smaller and not quite as nice, but avoids the whole Honda 6 cylinder / ATX thing.  Prices are reasonable, reliability is excellent, comfort and feature set are good, and they're great commuters.  K24 has a timing chain.

[edit] Probably not going to get over 28 mpg with the TSX, but you'll get 25-26.  Missed that part in the OP.  Prius sounds good.

1st gen Cruze or 2009 and up 4-Cyl Malibu?

Good - depreciation is on your side and highway gas mileage is phenomenonal.  Parts available everywhere

Bad - It's a GM, which is actually good because depreciation.  Looks only a mother (or a guy like me) could love

I love my '07 Prius for being the right tool for the job.  44 mpg, all the time w/o trying.  Feel free to even spend a little more for the Prius because from a 44 mpg to a 28 mpg the average person driving 15k miles per year will save about $600 per year in fuel.

I bought my '07 last year with 78k miles for $5,800.

This!!!!   They seem to be stuck at about 10k around here.  I would not mind one. It would be a really good DD for me.

You can't go getting people's hopes up like that! It's a dangerous game around these parts.
