Duke,

Personal bias, but you want the 6.4l vs the 5.7l if you go challenger.  Definitely drive both (test drives are approved abuse of a dealers car!).  I found the 5.7l drove like a lowered dodge ram, had *some* midrange torque, but that was the only high point, and the fun was over by 5k rpm.  The 6.4l revved right to redline and snarled and was properly exciting.  The difference in drivetrain was noticeable enough that i personally would not consider a 5.7l car.  R/T scat pack is the lowest trim for the bigger engine, and when i was looking, NOVA area dealers would sell them for $6-8k off msrp, so $34ish.  I was very impressed, it was quiet on the highway, usable trunk and backseat, only negative was its a little hard to clamber into the backseat, but once you're in it definitely fits four full size adults.  I think it is the only pony car that does.

Another option based on what you seem to be looking for: 2010+ Lexus ISF.  4 door sedan, big honkin' V8, good 8 speed auto.  Predates the current lexus styling, which may be a plus for you.  2010+ got the LSD and revised suspension (more comfortable).  No big reliability items that I have heard of.  Newer IS350 is less powerful, "modern" styling, and V6, but the fsports are pretty good, sporty, RWD or AWD camrys.  Probably also worth a test drive.  I was looking for quite a while for sporty, quiet, comfortable, and reliable highway commuters, and the lexus kept rising to the top.

So I bought an E46 :p

How much is a Tesla model 3?

$35k~$50k depending on options.

I don't think any of the mythical $35k Model 3s have been produced yet. They're filling orders for the more expensive versions first because they need cash flow. And now that Tesla has to begin phasing out the $7500 Federal tax credit, buyers will be paying more and more of the full price.

Right-field option: Porsche Panamera 4S.  You can get one of the 2013-2014 ones for $40k now.

Yeah, that thought has crossed my mind. I figured any one in my price range would have more miles on it than I really want. But it is an excuse to test drive one.

Thanks, everyone, keep ‘em coming!

Lots of like minded people in this thread: I was going to suggest G70, SS, ATS, CTS. It seems like these days there are a ton of good options for a $40k sedan. I would almost go so far as to ask if there are many bad options?

My first experience with one was Patrick Long using one as a taxi in the rain at a Porsche dealer trackday.  They're a blast.

Jag XE is a little pricey - you need to go up 2 trims to get leather seats, and adding the options I want puts sticker at almost $50k.  Probably not going to happen.

I found 2 Panamera 4Ss in my budget.  Both were 5 years old with 60,000 miles, and both sellers were sketchy AF.  Probably not going to happen.

I'm struggling to find a better value than the Volvos.

We tried a Fusion Sport last fall, and ended up with the S60 for only a little more money. We liked the Ford, but we liked the Volvo better.
