Budget ~ 5k

I paid $4100 for that Impala wagon in my last post and I though I was robbed. And that one had 59k original. Even was rolling on nylon bias-ply tires. 454 and A/C. $5000 is a pretty easy budget to find a nice old carbed superman lunchbox.

Even better than that, I snagged this 73 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon for $1500 with exactly 7100 miles on it. Not a typo. 7100.

Harrisburg, PA. I can look at a car if you want, but my schedule basically has me working 14 hours a day 7 days a week. It might be a while until I can break free for an inspection.

I came here to recommend first-gen Monte. My first car was a '72, 350 4bbl, TH350, 12 bolt 2.73 open, red with white top and black bench, 15x7 Rallys, PS PB AC. I would get another one in a heartbeat.

GM advertised the first gen montes with big blocks as "An iron fist in a velvet glove" How cool is that?

I'm thinking maverick, the mustangs ugly cousin, even though it's not ugly. Small, light, and cheap.

I'd get a Monza Spyder. 305 with Dualjet 2 barrel. Those will scoot up to 60 or so. The price may have gone up recently though since the Boost Caboose episode.

I always enjoy your posts Curtis but I'm not buying anything from eastern PA. Or western PA. Or anything north of Tennessee or south of Tallahassee. West of the Mississippi is different.

But my state offers cars that are so much lighter because 1/8 of them has rusted off. Think of the benefits to power/weight ratio.

If you think PA cars are light, just wait until you see some upstate NY or New England cars; Colin Chapman would approve

BTW, I'm having naughty thoughts about that Hornet.

Kinda rough but you could use that in your negotiation. http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/5900570510.html

This one is right at the top of your range but sounds like it is pretty much ready to kick ass in CAM. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/5934395687.html

I did too, but mostly because it was such a pile of E36 M3 with its stock engineering. Whoever thought that 4 wheel manual 7.5" drums were a good idea should be slapped. I basically replaced the entire braking system trying to figure out what was wrong, then I drove a friend's Hornet and it was the same as mine. Just pathetic engineering.

I recall on snowy mornings I could stand on the brake pedal with both feet, put it in gear, and one wheel would just spin in the snow without even touching the gas.

So, most of my dreams for that car involved engineering complete systems so I could drive the car without fearing impending death.

The answer to the OPs question seems to lie in this thread.
