Okay, a friend is looking for something to replace his six-speed, 230,000-mile 2005 Volvo S60R. He's looking to make a lateral move into something that's 2 to 5 years old.

Go.

Wait, someone got an s60R to 230K, but the internets say it's a death trap that will fall apart and cost you billions in upkeep?

Saab 9-3 Turbo x? or bmw 335ix?

I saw him this weekend, and he seemed very much alive. It's just time for something a little newer.

No idea, but if it was a wagon there would already be five of us asking for his number.

Budget?

Is he looking for something similar to his volvo? Is he looking at European or are japanese and domestic okay?

The first cars that jump to my mind are the legacy gt, Acura tl, sho, and the cts. He should be able to find a nice 2-3 year old example of any of those cars for reasonable money. Not for $200 and a pack of gum, but reasonable money for a nice car.

Not much to go on for parameters. Sedan? Coupe? Transmission choice?

I wouldn't even bother with a turbo x. Just get a 9-3x aero. It's literally the same car. same awd, same v6 twin trubo.

Basically a lateral move: four doors, manual box, all- or rear-wheel drive, not boring.

By 2010 the 6 was killed off and your only option was the 2.0T with 210hp or so. I have the non-AWD model and while it is fun, it won't hold a candle to an S60R. The V6 would be better and if he has made an S60R last that long a saab v6 should be fine.

Also, I don't recall the Aero getting AWD. I thought that was only the X model.

Gotcha. My vote would be for a 335i (as others have suggested). On my short list too. I wish a 335i wagon existed. That would be perfect for me!

I vote 335i or CTSV. Or maybe just a lowly ecoboost ATS?

What about a newer S60/V70 R?

No manual gearboxes on new Volvos.

This is what sucks about being a real-world car guy in 2014. There IS no replacement for a lot of cars anymore. The manual trans is dying, and the cool wagon is now $106,000 from Mercedes Benz.

Yeah, MazdaSpeed 6 I guess. But where are the realistically priced cars that people actually want to drive?

There's the ctsv wagon with a stick. I'd take that over the Benz all day everyday.

There is someone who lives around the corner from me who has one of the newer MB E350 wagons and that thing is a looker with a roof rack on top! I know its slushbox only with the Forester so how about a regular Forester? You can get those with a stick shift.
