We put the misses in a '15 X1 last year. Admittedly, not the prettiest car, but she's super happy with it after 8 months of ownership. The turbo 2L with the ZF8 behind it is shockingly quick...that trans is just a beautiful piece of engineering. She's getting 32-33mpg commuting it in as well. Typical BWM ergo and comfort so no complaints. After a couple of weeks of driving it in the ice and snow, it appears to handle the weather nicely.

Well, we now know what vehicle Pinchvalve recommends.

I'd go RAV 4 or CX-5. If I was in the market for an appliance, I would go with a RAV. The Mini's are small inside. The new Nissan Rogues seem to be nice and I haven't heard anything bad about them.

I like my parents CX-5, it's generally a pretty nice place to be.

If you want something smaller the CX-3 is based off the Mazda 2 platform and is pretty fun to drive around. The Rav4 isn't too bad either but it's less interesting to drive.

I'm kinda digging that Clubman that Pinchvalve keeps posting...

Hmmm CX-3 comes AWD, Might be too small though, but its on the list!

I'd rather look at a Fiat since its a known quantity (the Panda 4x4 is very highly rated in Europe) before I'd look at a MINI.

I know the Auto show is coming to Portland within the next weekend or so, not sure about Seattle, but it might be worthwhile. always great to see a bunch of different cars/trucks back to back to get an idea of whats what.

I rented an FX35 a while back, I think it rides like an oxcart in an attempt to defy the laws of physics. Handles country backroads nicely, but gave my wife and kids motion sickness doing it.

I've not driven one, but if the reason for a small SUV is MPGs, the RX400h hybrid gets them. It isn't as big as a suburban but it's no Rav4 either. The FX35 is the same size, sooooo....I'd drive a used RX400h and let her decide. The reliability on them is spectacular. For comparison, is your 4Runner considered too big for what she wants? Do you still have the 4Runner? Is that your DD?
