I’m partial to the sound of a can-am hemi coming up the front straight at RA ground shaking, best when followed by a 12 cylinder Ferrari, followed by a.....
Ok, just go the the vintage races at Road America, stand at he crest of the front straight and witness aero in action as they don’t go airborne. All engine, full song, I just love the smell of race gas in the morning.
Oh E36 M3 you said common, well technically they are all common to something.
Nope Nope Nope
BRM H16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBKUQPjQ16I
Turn up your sound! And revel in the glorious symphony.
Ooops not so common
Don't forget the I5 motors like the Volvo
Another vote for the 5 liter Mustang. Mine was glorious. Nothing since has ever compared.
Came here to say 5.0 Mustang, and it’s already been said 4 times. GRM never disappoints!

Can't argue with that. Straight vs Flowmasters

I like a 1uz, I like a 2jz, and an uncorked lfx sounds pretty g/d good.
When i blew the muffler off my 91 ranger i had several people comment on how cool it sounded, most thought i swapped in something v8.
It sounded pretty cool, so....4.0 ohv
Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 at full song. Of course it has to be an aircraft engine, because no engine on earth sounds as good.

Moto Guzzi big block flying twin.
Aprilia RSV4, that thing makes my pants tight.
Depends on what you call common, but this is my latest auditory obsession:
This one is stock, except for the mufflers being removed.
I’ll add the big block v8s to the list. When opened up big blocks can make the world stop.
For best audio, I am convinced that smaller cylinders sound better.
Best sounding Ferraris had V12s in the 2 to 3 liter range.
Best sounding six? Mazda 1.8l. BMW made a killing selling small sixes to the masses.
Best sounding engine of all time ever? Audi 2.1l five cylinder.
It's like.... it's like the howls of the engine are punctuated by the giggling compressor surge of the monster K27/29 turbo.
I love rotaries and I own... a few, and I daily drive a "K24" (K26 in all but name) five cylinder car, but my baby is the monster 5cyl Audi that I've been working on for a while. Because... that sound.

My dads old 2010 Hemi Charger had great noises inside the cabin, but never really noticed a charger driving by...
Yeah I vote SBF or LS. Both with plenty of RPM and not much muffler.
Honorable mention is 4.6 2v with the same treatment.
My vote for worst is a low compression SBC with the traditional abortion of a 3rd gen f body y pipe, shorty headers, and an slp loud mouth.
I posted this elsewhere on a new topic, but you can really hear the Fiat 124/132 Series Twin Cam in this video. It's a lovely little engine.

I had a 131 2 door many moons ago. That is one car I really wish I had kept.
The sound was glorious.

Polarizing choice, but one of my faves is an LS1 with 180 headers

Or just normal headers and a nice cam. Love the rasp.

False.
The only correct answer is 5.0 fox body Mustang with flowmasters. Glorious.
YES! Want to hear an uncorked 5.0 pushrod engine with x pipe and slp mufflers? Come to the challenge this year.
I'm trying really hard to get there this year with the Einhorn.
^^^^^^^^^Thanks for the VFR video. I recently bought an '08 VFR. The sound is a huge part of the reason.
I'll also say 24 VR6 - they sound awesome.
And although its very polarizing, I also love the VQ 35/37 uncorked.

1UZFE is said to be pretty awesome.
Having owned a car powered by one, and with open headers it’s a symphony of anger. 10/10 would bang.
If you look at motorcycle engines, the straight six cb1000 was incredible sounding. Straight six, and individual carbs.
