Too late now but a series on Curmudgeons Rotary Miata would have been cool.
Personally I like build shows and GRM has:
A) Actually have some technical knowledge in the vast sea of Youtube half-assery
B) Significantly more literate than most of Youtube.
C) Actual production chops.
Thinking somewhere in between MCM and Roadkill. Though I'd gratefully settle for a more informative and thought through B is for Build.
Challenge coverage/archived footage, but judging how you guys have involved so much more video just since last years challenge I think that's a given.
I like the live show, I'd like to see more tech tips kinda things. Yes, there are millions of tech tip videos on YouTube, but there's only one GRM.
Maybe evolve readers rides to a short video segment if it's possible?
Speaking of the live show, starting this week we'll be broadcasting on YouTube as well. That means that you'll get to watch it on Facebook, YouTube and our message board. We're going to announce this week's guest tomorrow, but plan on spending Wednesday evening with us
More of the same stuff I'm already watching, please: how-to features. There is something about seeing something done that gives me way more info about doing it myself than pictures and written steps alone can.
Also, features about cool cars and builds would be cool, along the lines of Reader's Rides. And event vids.
Buddy Travel Car Episodes are currently all the rage.
Team of Tim and Renee for "adult" and higher dollar hi-jinks.
Sample: Tim and Renee visit Wire Wheel and test drive some of the cool stuff they have.
Team of Tom and Higgenbothem for more "sophomoric" hi-jinks.
Sample: Tom and Ed take to The Firm for a day of classes/battle driving a fleet the school provides.
Continue with the mix of these two styles that we get from JG and add in some more David.
Sample: JG and David piece together a selection of car purchase test drives (which could be friends car) that include a C3 Vette, a C4 and a C5 back to back (all on a similar budget.)
Is a minty $15k C3 better than a rougher $15k C5? Pros and cons.
Lots of good ideas here already. Actually, the next 3 weeks of the live show is fairly hands-on tech centric, so I think you guys will dig it.
So everyone knows where we're coming from, the resources we're able to devote to production of this content are extremely limited. It's a testament to skill and Grade-A Hollywood bullcrap that we're able to pul it off and get it to look as good as it does already.
Because we're so resource-limited, our current format really favors live content for a couple reasons. A) Live stuff requires no time-consuming editing or post processing. B) It allows us to interact directly with our audience and C) We can do it with a bare minimum of crew. A typical show can have as few as two people running it.
But live does bring with it some limitations. For one, it's not terribly portable. Yes we can do broadcasts with phones remotely, but it's hard to bring the same production values that we can bring from the "studio." Also, travel is not cheap.
That said, I think the simulcasting of the live show on YouTube is going to be good for our team. It opens us up to people who don't like Facebook, and also people watching on connected TVs and not just computer/tablet users.
Judging by the responses in this thread already, I don't think you'll be a bit disappointed by the stuff we have panned going forward.
Which brings me to the most important part: If you like this and want to see it continue, SPREAD THE WORD. This world is 100% a numbers game. If we don't have eyes on the show, we can't afford to do it. Every "like" and every share is gold to us. If you can see your way clear to helping spread the gospel, we'll keep it up.
How about something with a doctor. Between some the GRM staff and all the subscribers we seem to have issues with broken bones and other illnesses. Case in point: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/broken-arm-update-and-a-tiny-bit-of-bmx-and-porsche-content-too/130257/page1/
And also the "crashing sucks" thread that's going on in sprockets forum which happens to include a bit from me. Clavicles and concussions seems to be a popular topic for motorcycle road racers. I'm not sure what is the common injuries are for people driving cars, but I'm sure there must be some common ailment for drivers. Possibly have a doctor go over it and the ways to reduce the recovery time, or prevent it in the first place.
The GRM Forum is a great place to find answers on any number of subjects including those that don't involve motorized vehicles. It's the range of subjects that makes the grm Forum such a great place to go. Do the same with YouTube and you'll definitely have a winner.
Yeah, broken bones have been common lately. My friend's sister just broke her back. Fortunately there's no paralysis, and she's on her way home. Still, stuff like that catches your attention.
GRM hacks - how to do stuff on the cheap - homemade tools, wiring a race car, diagnostics, how to figure out part interchanges, performance upgrades on the cheap (like e46 brakes on an e36), fabrication tips/tricks and tools - making an airbox, fab a fuel cell container for a bladder, brake bias/proportioning, race car plumbing, prepping your DD for an hpde...
I'll second Oldtins post. My two favorite videos so far were the Aerodynamics video you did with the mustang and the ecu tuning video you did with High Performance Academy.
I thought both did a great job of shining light on dark areas for me and explained very clearly how i could test, improve, and measure the changes i made to those areas on my projects.
To relate to what Oldtin said: a wind tunnel is beyond out of the question for my car, but running up and down the highway with a $50 magnehelic gauge taped to the dash sounds like a stinking blast! Now i can measure aerodynamic changes to my vehicle within a very limited budget
What about video versions of that two old guys car radio show, where people can submit questions for advice and you guys try to answer?
Definitely more coverage for the Challenge and UTCC. To be honest, when I get the those issues of the magazine, I find the coverage severely lacking in details. Which seems strange to me since you guys put so much effort into those events.

We've done a couple of "video feature car" shows already. 5-10 minute clips featuring interviews with owners, footage of the cars, etc. They were well received, there will be more :)

If the plan works out, expect LOTS of coverage from the Challenge this year. My tentative plan is for something like 30-minute segments at the top of every hour. So from 11:00-11:30, we're on, then from 11:31-11:59 we're off, then back on at 12:00-12:30, etc. If we do a continuous livestream it won't be properly archived. It also gives a chance to rest personal, charge batteries, prestage interviews, etc.
That's the plan that I'm working toward, anyway. There's some technical and manpower hurdles to overcome, but I'm fairly sure we'll be able to do it.
Another feature we're considering: Expert analysis.
Guy brings his car to the shop. Expert looks it over and assesses setup, prep strengths and weaknesses and recommends a plan of action. Kind of like one of those shows where some couple fixes up a crappy house, except with a car, and not fake.
In reply to JG Pasterjak:
I look forward to seeing what you guys can do. It just seems like there is a lot of editorial content "left on the table" with the magazine coverage, which tends to read like, "A bunch of cars showed up. Here's a list of them and their times. Oh... and here's a few pictures from the event." But there isn't much in the way of a "story" to tie it all together, if that makes any sense. But it's been awhile - I'll have to go back and read them again.
Margie's new weekly segment "From The Patio" where she interviews forum members via Skype about their projects, their backgrounds, and their inspiration.
