I've got this conundrum right now, and I've got it marked down to 986 Boxster (not likely, as I don't like the M96 engine), NC MX-5, AP1 S2000, and MR-Spyder.
Right now, I'm leaning toward MR-Spyder.
Of your list, I would go MX-5, but I am surprised how much fun the MINI Cooper S is. Should be cheap to run, I have not heard of too many issues with either gen

I have heard of a lot fewer issues with the later turbo S Minis then the earlier supercharged ones.

Shrug. It's easy to get 28mpg in a C5. Easier than a C4, and my C4 got 28mpg without any effort on the highway.

As if this shouldn't be obvious, my S2000 didn't come from anywhere near Maine. Any location where one might find a car, there is probably someone right here whose idea of a fun Saturday is to go check it out for you :).
If consumables are killing you then power and weight are your enemy. Save up a little more and get an Elise. Buy a mx-5, s2000, boxster, ...

I appreciate your sarcasm, I truly do. But if I have a car I'd prefer to trade in, spending $1000+ on a plane ticket/gas/hotel room on the way back and still having the current car to get rid of....................

I have no problem affording the car or it's consumables, I just WANT to spend to less.
