As title asks... what is this? And how horrible of an idea is it to try to pick it up?
I can't seem to find much if any info on it, other than it MAY have 315hp.

"I have a 1986 Mercedes Benz 420 AMG. This car needs a lot of work but does come with a lot of replacement parts. Acording to the Mercedes dealer, there were only 300 total built and 50 to be sent to the states. I have only seen one other like it since i have owned the car. I DOES RUN but for sure needs a fuel pump and filter. All of the original body parts are there as well as the FACTORY BODY KIT AND RIMS!!!! I do have replacement doors and front fenders as well as a new ALUMINUM trunk lid and bumpers. The seats in the car are fairly new and as I said before IT NEEDS WORK TO BE DRIVEN!!! Also, this car is in need of a paint job. The pictures dont show it very well, but the paint is chipping/peeling off in a lot of places. THE PRICE IS FIRM as the dealership told me that in the condition that it is in I could sell in upwards of $6,000.00. I am not out to screw anybody or I would be selling it for ALOT more. I can e-mail more pics upon request. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions 317-640-6065 Richard or e-mail can work too "
for the $1K he's asking? may not be a bad DD after the Fuel Pump
for 1K if it were closer i'd be on my way to get it.
looks cool in the crappy pics.

Hmmm....do a google for "AMG Hammer". I don't know about this one (420), or if the ad is correct. Doesn't look like it.
I guess the best bet would be to see what engine is in it and take it from there.

That's what i'm thinking.... i'm just trying to figure out exactly what it is... he hasn't responded to my email yet, and i can't call him for a few hours.
It's a ballertastic car for a DD, sure... i'm just not sure i need a ridiculously thirsty rocket. 315hp in one of these would be sufficiently insane.
On the other hand, it looks cool enough that i'm having a hard time justifying NOT wanting to get it.
Looks like it MAY be a cosworth...
But the rear wing doesn't look quite right, and the cosworth didn't have the headlight wipers i don't think.
We'll see if he replies... this is driving me nuts.

It looks like a M-B 190E 2.6-16 to me...

I thought the only Cosworth-Mercedes collaboration was the 190e?
Why is it that there are more cool/interesting Mercedes in Indianapolis than anywhere else? Anybody else notice this, or just me?
It's not the Cosworth model. Those only came in the 190 body style. This is the larger S Class body.

Nope, not just you. A couple years ago I was going to go with a friend to pick up a Mercedes 6.9 in Indianapolis before the dealer raised the price significantly after agreeing to sell it for $800.
Edit: I was replying to MTN, Joe snuck in there.

Definitely not you. After further investigation, this looks like it is indeed a Hammer.
And i know where there is ANOTHER Hammer about 2 miles from my house.
There's also been 3 Cosworth E190s through the local car forums in the last two years.
Hopefully this guy bites... i can't pass this up.
Challenge Hammer?

I didn't know there were so many coke dealers in Indianapolis. I'm holding out for one with Testorosa flares myself.

I saw a Blazer with the Testarossa body kit in the local Pic-A-Part a few months ago.... interested?
And i just got a reply to my email:
I will have my husband email you when he gets off of work, He should be able to answer all of your questions. He will be home at 4:30. There is not alot of info avaialble on this car since it was such a limited production. I know it has a huge motor in it though. It is supposed to be very fast.
Interested to here how this works out for you.
I can't tell if it's glare or what. Is the passenger side smooshed...and that is why he has spare doors?
You need a vin number to tell what it is and AMG might not have any information for you. I don't know if it is real, but would doubt it. The stock engine out of the 560 w126 put out around 300HP so 315 wouldn't be a stretch. But it says it is a 420 so it isn't the 32V Hammer, AMG seems to be such a failure compared to BMWs M group. I'd guess it is a pimp my benz with the ugliest paint job and wheels with an AMG emblem on the back. Real AMGs are a tough find and I think I've seen 3 real old AMG modified mercedes.
The cosworth were for the 190E model, I think they modified either the 2.3l or 2.5l 4cyl. I saw someone selling a used cosworth head for 2000$ to give you a price reference. Just like the 500E the cosworth are still worth money.
If this car was real, buy it and part it out. A real verifiable AMG engine with cams will be worth $$$$, but not unless you know what has been modified. AMG didn't keep great records so you'd likely be on your own regarding provenance.

While it may be an AMG, it's definitely not a "Hammer". That model was only available in the E-class body style (W124). The car in the CL pictures is an S-class.
One of the real AMGs I saw had an outlandish paintjob, a bright magenta something like the car pictured, but the chrome was colored the same too. Hell if I know what the thing is, but they made enough of them that the junkyard is your friend.

$1000? Go! Get it! You could probably sell the wheels for that even if the rest of the car is trash. And if it's a big motor, then it's total Challenge fodder.

In a sick way i'm hoping it's gross enough to not feel bad about challenging it and that i can talk him down.
This thing would be hilarious with some Cragar style wheels, flat black paint job, and a ridiculously huge nitrous shot.
Counting down the time til 4:30 when the guy gets home...
Challenge? Locost Donor you freakcycle.

I think you just broke the internet, there....
Locost with this motor, a powerglide, and a Ford 9" rear end? Seems to defeat the purpose, but it's SOOOOO right.
