oh, should also be relatively available and cheap, come with some form of RWD manual trans, and lightness counts too.
Just a thought game, please post engine/length (and specify what that dimmension is measuring, ie transmission surface to crank pulley bolt, etc)
In know not inline, but I'm intrigued with the short staggered VR-6 rwd conversions out there.

That is neat. While I loved the vr6 in our old Jetta, I'm quite jaded by any vw. Ever.

The VW drivetrains aren't nearly as bad as the rest of the car, in my experience. VR6 is a great suggestion in a lot of ways, sounds sexy, and is pretty stout with the right areas addressed.
The smallest and lightest would be an old bike engine.
A quick guess, just based on displacement: It might be the Nissan L20A.

A VR6 with a non-VW ECU is definitely an interesting idea... I think the crappy part will be finding the RWD transmission - early 924, IIRC?

What old bikes are inline 6es? I know a lot of inline 4s, but 6?

I agree, very interesting. Sounds like it is really a 15deg v6, I always thought the VR6 was a 60 deg V6 or something. the more you know...
Other than the transmission being a problem, the first thing that came to mind was the CBX1000.
VR6 is a narrow angle V-6 with a single cylinder head. Wikipedia has a good write up about them.

Honda CBX, or a Benelli Sei. Neat engines but not readily available.
edit: also the Kawasaki KZ1300, which was water cooled.

The rest of that samba thread is the funnies.
Other than cheater options and motorcycle engines (again cheater options as no way to mount a car transmission onto), you are probably looking at some of the Brit sixes. I know that the ones used in some of those older British convertibles are much smaller than their German and Japanese relatives.

I know that you can fit a Terraplane six in a Model A without too much trouble. It's a flathead though. I no longer have this cylinder head, but you might be able to use the box for reference.

OK, now I have to read it. I just cribbed the pic for the OP.
Daewoo XK6 perhaps? http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=1408
They say it's 642mm long. For reference, The Internet tells me that the Ecotec 2.2 inline-four is 665mm long. I'm having a hard time finding info on the VR6.

I'm jaded too. Get one out of an Audi. Its like having to consider a wife's pretty sister.
Didn't AMC shorten the six someway when they put it in the CJ ?
Don't know how short that made it.
Are looking at MX-5 Miata swap? I have thought about whether VR6 would fit in mine. I have not garb a tape measure yet.
The small Triumph 6 (Vitesse, GT6, TR6) are fairly short, inexpensive, widely available from 1.6L-2.5L, RWD.
I had a VR6 in my Corrado and loved that engine. It both had torque and liked to rev. And the sound...somewhat Italian-like!
