I found a sweet old sears toolbox- like a 60s or 70s vintage- at a local goodwill and i'm gonna seal it back up and make it into the *perfect* yard box. I'm in the process of scraping all the old paint off, but what kind of paint would be best for not getting dinged to death carrying old tools and iron? Thick epoxy? Several layers of spray paint and clearcoat? Maybe even something as esoteric as wax?
A thin coat of bed liner inside and Rustoleum outside ? I usually use a 5 gallon plastic pail, so my aesthetics may be different.
Rustoleum Hammered.
As a bonus, it doesn’t need primer.

Another vote for the Rustoleum Hammered stuff. I did one of my scavenged Craftsman boxes in the green metallic and it looks pretty decent, and seems quite robust so far. Probably going to redo my Kennedy the same way (the old paint is flaking badly at this point).
Por-15?
I like the Rustoleum suggestion. The spray isn't quite as good as the stuff in the can, but either works better than nothing.
Hammered Rustoleum. Brush on not spray can.
If you want durability, consider the appliance spray epoxy. I bought a set of white steelies for my crown Vic, and painted them black. They never chipped and were impossible to scratch.

Who does colored appliance paint? I've only been able to find white.

Rust-oelum does
paint
That's the stuff, comes in all the boring colors. Really durable though.
Good to know, thanks. I wanted the interior to be a gray or a white so things were easily seen anyway.
I tend to lean 0 form, 100% function. Bed liner. Or some kind of hi-vis.
Otherwise all are good suggestions.

Appliance epoxy is serious business.
I forgot what I sprayed with it the first time I used it, but it was badly textured due to operator error, and I tried block sanding it to smooth it out before a second coat. Ha. It mostly wore out the sandpaper.
It's awesome for doing things that don't have to be "nice", just "one color". I did my wheelwells with it and it has been holding up great to rocks and stuff.
